Does this make sense or shall I get my coat?
Makes complete sense, and I agree. I can see the need for a certain amount of sponsorship at the top level, but it amazes me the amount of free stuff companies give out, especially in the states. And still people want more.

The article in this month’s PGI talks about this as well, but I won’t spoil it for all of you.;)

Personally at the end of the day its all down to whether the company wants to give deals to teams, or even full sponsorship.
Companies have been known to approach teams as well and throw a good few deals at em, without that particular team asking.

I think the fact why teams go after deals or sponsorship is purely to do with the money side of things. I mean how hard is it to slap a logo on your jersey and get good deals? not hard at all really, and in most cases the companies benifit more than the teams do.

Plus having a logo on your jersey can be part of an image thing, it gives teams a sense of importance, and a belief that they are the bollox because of a few logo's on your jersey.

If your a new team, and have no performance back footing then go for small outside company sponsors. You might not get any paintball gear or paint, but you will recieve decent amounts of money to help you out for the season.

Just my 2 pence worth,
Darren

New teams getting decent amounts of money from sponsors ?

Possible, i suppose - But most definatley the exception rather than the rule. I would be very suprised to see any new teams receiving cash sponsorship from a company. Maybe a new team made up of highly seasoned pro's, or sponsorship from a company that has some personal link to the team, like "daddy's pub paid half our entry fees for the season" type thing. But i guess if you throw your net far enough you're bound to find a sucker somewhere.

Surely it's down to the bottom line $$, will it make them more money than it will cost them. What can the team offer them in exchange for the sponsorhip. Do they get their photo in PGI are they winning events? And does that result in higher revenue for the company. If not try and get money out of the lottery or your council or something, coz your after charity.

Like i said, you might get lucky, but it would be a better bet to try and negotiate a discount for buying all the teams kit from one supplier. That way you also get nice matching kit.
