A couple of the bikes I've built over the years

That's not me, by the way. It's the dude I built the Sportster for.

The bike's got a hand built frame (by me), one off tank & oil tank, GSXR750L wheels (reversed) & 3 grands worth of paint.

The Z1100 drag bike ran well int the 7 second bracket, gave up racing due to a broken pelvis:(

Get this then for California Si,
I was in court with a speeding ticket, which cost me $241 bucks (I wasn't going that fast)

They put people 10 at a time in front of the Judge. Nearly everyone out of the 100 or so in the room were Mexican guys and few spoke English.

Several of them had no licence, no insurance and no registration, the equivalent of having no insurance, tax or MOT in the UK. The worst one had already been in court 1 month ago for the same exact thing, and was back in court for just ignoring the fact he was banned, and still not having any insurance or registration (and of course no drivers licence). That guy was fines $350 and given 3 months to pay. In fact that was the largest fine any of those guys got. But if you drive in the car-pool lane with less than 2 guys in your car you get a mandatory $351 fine.

Now thats ridiculous!

Yeah it's crazy, I had to to a 'defensive driving' for my speeding ticket. :D

Heck even getting my USA licence was hilarious. I would have failed on soooo many points in the UK. But I still passed here... we won't even go into the bike test.

Suffice to say I wouldn't ride a bike here if my only traiing was 15mph max around cones in a parking lot.

How they deal with traffic at 65 if that's all it takes to get a licence is scary.

Yes you do. I had to do a car test and a bike test.

The practical is hilariously easy. Scary in fact.

I did mine soon after arriving in the USA as I needed a US licence to insure any car I was going to own. I borrowed a HUGE Chevy Avalanche which was the biggest thing I had ever driven and went to the DMV with little practice in driving the monstrous thing.

At the start of the test I drove over a curb as I pulled out... I would swing it wide as I went around corners to avoid clipping any more curbs and got told off by the examiner for crossing into the wrong lanes. I did the posted speed limit (35) on the service roads and she told me off for speeding! I almost argued with her... I had to parallel park between two poles I couldn't see because of the size of the truck. I forgot to indicate because of being pissed off about driving over the curb...

And I PASSED! I couldn't believe it.

As I went into the DMV there was a guy trying to parallel park a civic... when I came out 15 minutes later he was still trying... and apparently that's not a failure as long as he eventually gets it! OMFG.

However! HUGE WARNING, don't be complacent about the written test... I was answering as if in the UK and kept getting the answers wrong. I had read the book but it's very different to the laws I got used to in the UK.

SWOT up on the book. Lots, and don't sweat the practical. If you even look like you know how to operate a motorised vehicle you should be able to pass.

I called ahead but pretty much just showed up I think.

It depends on how busy your local DMV is. Texas was quiet.

I don't think I had to show my UK licence but can't remember. Any time I have to do something 'official' I tend to turn up with all my documents just in case. Licence, passport, visa, proof of address etc.

It was such a juxtaposition between my theory and practical in the states - had to take 35 hours of classroom lessons and pass a few tests with 70% pass mark before they would they would even let my take a practical lesson!

When they finally let me into a car (at 15, in Virginia this was), the ruling back then went that I had to have a minimum of 7hours of actual driving lessons and 7 hours of 'observing' lessons, whatever that meant.

I took 3 practical lessons with this 350lb instructor who insisted on giving directions whilst his mouth was stuffed with potato chips and listening to country rock blasting on the stereo. On my 4th lesson, I'm about half way through and he says to me "You know what Alex? It's actually a pain in the ass for me to come out here and teach you every week, your kind of out of my jurisdiction. I tell you what, your not a bad driver so if you drive to the metro station without hitting anything or crashing the car I'll pass you and give you $5 to get home on the train"

That shocked the crap out of me....but I made it to the metro in one piece. He whips out this green book from the glove compartment and starts scribbling, then says "Right, your still 15 aren't you?" I nod, "OK well technically you can't take your test till your 16, so take this piece of paper, I've post dated it and when you turn 16 mail it off and you'll get your full licence."

I couldn't believe it!!! Took the tube home and never saw him again - got my licence a month later and haven't looked back since though!!

Soz, a bit off subject. But goes to show how easy it is to get licensed in the States!
