I'm asking about bank holidays b/c alot of things in europe have different meanings than in the US. In the US I've never heard of a bank holiday but we do have holidays that aren't religious.

We have bank holidays here in the states too. They're the days the major financial markets (Wall Street) are closed, so many businesses close on these days too. For the most part, bank holidays coincide with the major national holidays, like Christmas and New Years.
Every major economic country has bank holidays of some kind. Most western countries have similar bank holidays. Some started out as religious days and have just become traditional, such as Good Friday and Christmas. Others are more nation-specific. For example, the 4th of July is an American holiday and Bastille Day is a French holiday, but neither is celebrated in Great Britain.
