Wandering around freshers fair at uni I came across a table with a sign saying "Splatt Society" - there's all sorts of clubs/socs at uni's. The guys at the table described paintball and I thought "Wow, sounds like fun".
First game was at Close Encounters (?) in Coventry with the Splatt Soc - about 30 hung over students! Protective gear in those days was: One size fits no one overalls - same there then, funny green plastic face plate & a pair of those goggles you used to wear at school during science experiments - how uncomfortable. Markers were the Splat Master and if you were lucky a PGP. They used the little gas cannisters and held all of 10 rounds.
I got hit in the middle of my unprotected forehead in the first game and had what looked like a hikkey in the middle of my forehead for over a week! But I was hooked. The first thing I did was buy a baseball cap to wear next time and a pair of JT Thermal goggles for comfort.
I still remember the excitement of playing my first ever game with a slam fire capable pump gun! WOW. Made those Splatmasters look tame. I bought myself a Phantom shortly after - still got it today.
Not to mention my first (and only) inter uni tourney when we came up against opposition using semi's for the first time. Tipmann Carbines (?) - they looked like M16s I seem to remember.
Oh god, I feel old now Those were the days.
