i shot an ion today, the dons infact (bought it off him for my mate, who lent it me for a few rounds), and it was great

- super light weight (Cf my Eblade)
- capable fo fast shooting (was semi only at this site, no problem keeping up)
- very easy to set up, just screw in a preset, shove on a decent hopper (used a halo B fine) and adjust reg to 170
- no chops on the bolt

I liked it. Id buy one. Nuff said. Your mileage may vary..

brand new i think Justpaintball do an ion and a preset 5000psi for £285

add money for hopper (there is a smoke egg2 with z board capable of 19bps for sale on classifieds for £45 posted - BARGAIN) which is more than capable and you wil NEVER outshoot it with the ion..

so you looking at £320 if you did that....
i know uncle fester has an ion brand new unused for sale at £170 too but see if you can haggle him - again search the classified in the past 3 or so pages.

then just buy a preset for like £100 and hopper anything from £40 odd to £80 depending on what you want (i used a halo today, faultless)

thats my recommendation
presets work fine, used an evil 5000psi bottle with PMI 5000psi high pressure preset today, faultless. ion running at 170 psi. stable and efficient.

then get a barrel such an an all american, freak or cheapest of all progressive.

good luck and have fun

egg are fine, not too big at at just saw off the feedneck and the profile is small as anything i reckon.

if money no option go for ion and preset new, then buy a decent barrel, and a halo/reloader B

and budget £30 for a rail and on off ASA, plus another bit of dollar for a clamping feedneck.

I only say this because when you get the bug, and you will, you will spend on upping your ion and for the money you spent you could have got a better marker.
With respect, I think this is nonsense. The Ion has ben out a month. There have no serious problems opr issues with its build quality in the UK. Why the scepticism about its longevity?

It doesn't NEED upping - except for a decent barrel, and how many stock barrels are good enough?

The Ion competes straight out of the box. I'm not saying it's as good as a timmy, but put it like this - the difference between the Ion and a top class gun is more than compensated for by the differences between the players behind them...

This is just my personal experiences with paintball equipment, maybe this has jaded me a bit. im not even anti smart parts i own and am currently upping my imp. My warning was that if you rush out and buy the newest piece of kit, especially budget stuff, you can get stung and have to buy again because of bad worksmanship. I know that it has happened to me. I know the ion also doesnt need upping but in my post i warned that once you have your shiney new marker you will probably want to, and make it more idividual like most of us out there. If i had an ion i would get a few bits straight away like a on/off purge and a barrel system.

thats a good point by ladyboy, i do think its wise wait for a running in period before rushing out and buying the newest kit (yes i did rush out and buy one of the first ions in the uk), and i do think the ion is made to a budget, but it is simple to work on, and you know there's going to be plenty around so spares and upgrades should be easy to find. but there also the fact that used equipment is always a risk, you dont know how much use theyve had, or what condition there in internaly, and new markers come with warrenties, so on balance id go for the ion or any of the other new breed of 'high end' budget markers, as im sure there are more to come. like i said a couple of months ago its an exiting time for paintball. markers and air seem to be coming down in price. fingers crossed everything else will follow ;)

£500 for a full setup? You can get a really nice tourney setup for that price of classifieds!!!
Thats not the price of a budget gun at all...

I dont think a spool valve gun is appropriate for a backup gun anyway. Far too many moving orings.

I much prefer the wrath...

From reading how the wrath works I think it will make an excellent starter or backup gun.

The key difference between the two designs will be reliability and the ability to field strip the bolt.

The wrath looks like it will be much more efficient too.
