You answered your own query really.

It is an essential aspect of every players game at some point and a waste of time in others. But when is it a waste of time?

When it is safe to knee slide and shoot earlier. But thats up to the players discretion and Id encourage front guys on any risky breaks or runs to do it - survival rates shoot up.

But back/mid guys need the dive now too - some feilds are wide and short and back positions can be keyed early on by short breaking mid guys so bellying in can keep you alive here too.

So - learn the dive - it'll keep you alive!!

Mark, it wasn't so much a case of answering my own question, but asking a question and giving my angle. At the end of the day I was curious if others agreed the showboating can get a bit excessive at times...Sure. Wanting to please the crowd is one thing. Losing a game cause you had to take a key spot but left your hopper behind is silly...:)

And Dannefaerd! You're on notice. If you don't post either some form of evidence or a retraction of your previous statement regarding me "breaking early" then I'll see you in court for libel. If you're referring to the screen cap in the movies section on the Saints web site ( http://www.saints-paintball.org ) on field two at Rotorua this year, watch the movie, listen to the horn, watch me go...Also, I'll want more evidence than a "photo" please.

Or perhaps we'll just settle this on the field...:D

What I meant was that your angle was just about right

However the case of leaving your loader behind, mid dive, is in the realms of those goobers who either dont dive properly or their loader doesnt fit securely (or both)!

Ah. Well there in lies another subject...What is the way to "dive properly"? Any way that gets you in without A) Hurting yourself or B) Doing in your marker? Or is there more to it than that? One one slide I lost my gogs once as my chin hit the ground. That wasn't fun. Needless to say I've added some elastic to my gogs now to keep them in place at all times...

Study some vids

Some yanks do it great (Lasoya) or just watch Bowen from Rushers.

Both those guys make it look easy - they slide along the ground - they dont throw themselves at it.

The art, as far as I can see, is to tip yourself forward as you run and therefore hit the ground smoothly - not just throw yourself in the air so coming down vertically - and therefor losing goggles and loader.

VW's are the game
You know honestly it all depends on the size of the person playing front, the bunkers and the length of the field. When I was playing front at Angel Cup the bunkers were small and the back guys could really lay a serious line of paint because they were so close. So just about every time I played the 2 Sup Air fields I was diving. Not only that the field conditions have to be right! You won't catch me diving on rocky or rock hard dirt! :D

We must be related, my dad always calls me a muscular nail (literal translation, mind thee).
Unless you're diving into jagged rocks or hot coals you don't really need one. Just do it fast enough and you'll be fine dawg.
