you can't really moan too much about paint prices- 15 years back how much do ya think a 10 shot tube would of cost ya????

give up- bout the same as a 100 shot pot full now

plus you only had single shot markers, unless you were real lucky and used one of those new fangled pumps

site paint is too expensive!... or is there a good reason for charging 5p per ball!
for me..that is rediculas!
and noone starts playing because it costs too much!
and we aint going anywhere fast if the prices dont drop..
if we want more people to play then we need to make it as cheep as possible for new-commers!

what do you guys think?
Unfortunatly mate you are paying for the use of facilities, just like a pub charges double what you could pay in a supermarket for booze, you pay the extra for the service, facilities, etc.

Also bear in mind that rental operators have no interest in people progressing in the sport. The ultimate goal for most rental sites is to get people hooked enough to come back 2 or 3 times a year, and thats it.

As for everyone getting exited over the cost of paint in the US, the reason we pay soo much is our wonderful government!

for example box of paint in US +$40

Shipping $10

Import duty on the above at 5% $2.5
Vat on above at 17.5 % $8.75

SubTotal : £31.85 (.52 exchange rate)

Brokerage fee's by UPS £10

£41.85

so there you go, you are paying what the Americans pay, kind of.....

Well, just to post a view from the US...

Our site (Velocity Paintball in West Liberty, IA) is probably the cheapest I know of. For people with thier own equipment, we charge $5 for all day air (either CO2 or HPA) and $50 per case of RPS Premium. Our rentals are pretty average for starting cost. $30 you get a rental gun (M98), mask, all day air, and 500 paintballs. Extra paint is sold at the $50 a case price above. We also have one weekend a month where we charge $5 all day air and allow people to bring thier own paint.

Other sites around here can get fairly expensive. Our main competitor in the area sells cases for $70 and charges $10 field fee. Rentals are the same package as we have, but costs $40 to get started. Then, extra paint is sold for the $70 price above.

An average price for field paint is $65, and $10-15 is average for field fees (which may or may not include all day air). Sites tend to try to get the rental packages down to about $30-40 for a day of play. Very few fields allow BYOP. Indoor fields are always more expensive, but they can charge a premium because they have to run the heat in the cold weather.

the rec site i have been involved with for about 5 years makes its money solely from paint sales. Someone listed a bunch of stuff that needs to be taken into consideration, but I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned marshals? You need to pay marshals....that is one of the most expensive aspects of running a site.

Also lenses in goggles need changing ALOT. You know the score...."marshal I'm steaming up!!" and so they scratch around inside it trying to wipe off the steam and seven guys are charging them down. New lenses in 200 sets of goggles every few months is a huge money eater.

Cutting prices does not guarantee increase in custom.
Remember site owners have already put a lot of money in and need to make a good return quickly or the banks or other investors start applying the pressure. In the last 5 years insurance premiums on some sites has increase 1000% and yes there is 3 noughts there. Imaging if you car insurance went up by that much and you still had to pay it.
Some sites are more expensive that others, so if you are unhappy just go somewhere else.

Dark Warrior is right,

Start off with an £18,000 insurance bill, £20,000 marshals bill, rent, accountants, solicitors, marketing, cleaning and maintenance, equipment, etc,etc....

Then think about making £5 per box of 2000. Imagine how many you would have to sell just to break even not to mention a profit to live on.

Lets be serious for a minute and not comment on issues that no one other than a site operator has any concept of.

Just remember it's the sites and rental players who prop up the sport of paintball. Competition paintball and walkons could not sustain paintball on their own.

If you want to make paintball cheaper for yourself, go out and do a deal with your local site, you get them 20 players, they give you a box of paint.

Just think for a minute. If the site you play comps at /train at /do walk on's at did not have full paying customers it would not be there for you to use.

Cherish the position that you find yourself in (ie. being able to get cheap paint and being able to participate in an unsustainable sport) and don't try and spoil things for yourselves by posting silly and un thoughtout comments on a public forum.

Totally agree Bolter..Marshals pay is a big expense.
When i listed the costs in my previous post i was mainly listing the stuff that is needed for rental play alone (thus explaining why rental paint is 5p/6p a ball).
The stuff I listed isn't needed for walk-ons as everyone has their own kit which means paint at walk on days is much cheaper. Generally the cost of supplying marshals is the same for rental and walk on days.
