'in ya face baby!'
re

i have held a firearms cert for 5years now, and the only weapon i posses that requires it is an air rifle! if the said air rifle has a working output pressure of 12foot pounds then you do not need a licence, as mine is at 55foot pounds it is classed as a lethal weapon, and therefore an FA cert is req.

According to Hotpoint (who really does know about these things), paintball markers are classified as airguns and as such fall under the firearms acts 1968-1997. As the muzzle energy does not exceed 12ft/lbs they don't have to have a firearms license - if we regularly shot them at over 330 fps then we would need one as that would bring them up to the muzzle energy limit. This means we are bound by section 5(1)a which bans the private ownership of fully automatic firearms.
This also means that technically no-one under the age of 17 can buy a paintball marker, own one given to them as a gift if under 14 or use one without supervision by an adult (over 21).
So - firearm yes, needing firearms licence no.

Did you mean to say :

If it says firearms then I am guessing that fully automatic airguns are not Illegal and as paintball markers are classified as airguns this would mean fully automatic paintball guns are also legal?

Minnow - not quite sure what you're getting at here. All airguns above some pathetically low muzzle energy (e.g. airsoft guns which are so low powered that they class as toys) are covered by the firearms acts 1968-1997. All airguns covered by the act are also included in section 5(1)(a) which bans any fully auto firearms, thereby banning the use of fully auto airguns.

Basically it boils down to - airgun with muzzle velocity under 12ft/lbs = must comply with most of the act but doesn't need to be licensed

Just because paintball markers fall into the "airguns with under 12ft/lbs muzzle velocity" category so don't need a license, doesn't mean to say they aren't covered by most of the rest of the firearms act. People seem to be getting confused by the difference between licensed and covered by the act, and also seem to think that the act only covers "firearms" which use some kind of explosive (hence the "fire" part) and not airguns.

dictionary defenition:

fire arm: a device that fires a missile with more energy than 8 joules when it leaves the barrel.

nowt about propellant there!!

something like a bb gun fires with an energy of 3 joules or less, a paintball gun fires with something like 15. so there :p

i also have a Desert Eagle replice air soft gun, and this is one of the most powerful u can buy without giving it 'modifications' yourself and that bad boy has a whole 0.5 Joules energy!!

not much power, but the desert eagle does sting quite a bit...not as much as a paintball tho:(

Under 1 foot/lb enery = toy
Between 1-12 foot/lb energy = airgun
over 12 foot/lb energy = firearms licence required

Anything over 1 foot/lbs falls under the firearms act and as such can only fire semi auto ( or more specifically less than 2 projectiles fired with each trigger pull)

Paintball markers will be putting out about 8-10 foot/lbs energy so are covered by the firearms act. In the 1997 ammendment Co2 powered weapons were classed as airguns and it specifically mentions paintball markers.

It also bears mentioning that paintball pistols by law have to fire under 6 foot/lbs to be legal.
