I think that this thread sums up the lack of interest in reffing which has prevailed in the UK game for some years.

This thread has had 8 replies, one of which is from someone who would want his expenses paying to attend a reffing course.

If you are not willing to make things change, nothing will change - so if people cannot motivate themselves to ref - and ref regularly - we will have the same core of people reffing events are getting tired of abuse if and when they make mistakes - and even when they make the right calls.

The UKPSF would probably accredit a ref course, if the course structure was submitted to them for review. After all, the EPSF were the originators of the ref course, and there are quite a few people still about who took it.
Think you will find that NSG approved site or tournament grade mashals were around before the EPSF courses, badger used to run them.

Now I don't think this sums up the intrest in reffing in this country. While as you can see not many people have posted, why should they, after all it was only random questions with no details.

I've travelled around this country ( well Midlands and South) and have found very dedicated people that ref.

Now if this was aim at finding the level of interest in running a Euro ref course or such like then I'm fairly sure that there would have been more interest/posts.

1. Yes UKM for last 3-4 seasons. With a view to Mills after reffing with Jabba & Nick

2. Yes, providing we had some sort or certificate/card (like ID cards)

3. Some refs can be arrogant. Some. not all.

4. Prima donna's. Don't f**kin whine when your caught or a decision doesn't go your way. And accept the dam decision. dont square up to the ref cos you and your shiny ass toy didnt get your way.

Actually mate, a lot of people come up at events and ask about reffing, a lot of people i train/played with look to get into it. But they prefer playing more.
A lot of people agree its a thankless task, but the guys i ref with (John,James,Sue,Callum,Ash Andy) are a great bunch we have a great time.

1 yes

2 no, you get better with games and time ...

3 i don't play anymore because i marshal

4 Is an interesting one .

Respect from player must be earned , and not expected because of the top you have on.

Marshals Must play as a team and you must run a fair field.

we don't look for cheats and so on. we are there to run a smooth game and defuse confusion,

i think a good question in this thread would be

5 Can you play paintball with out us on the field?

oh and i have a crew of 6 people who want to train as euro refs ,,,, you try getting on that training coarse

I reffed the masters for 07 and some of 08.In the end the wages just dont cover you if you have to travel.Once I had payed petrol I actually lost out after reffing in Lincoln and Ancaster. It seems that event organisers pay a set fee to a ref regardless of how far they travel to work.I am happy to work for very little but paying to ref(which in effect is what a was doing) is silly.
Bottom line is cash .If you can get a local ref(or one that is part of your tourney set up crew) to do a "quite good job" then thats what most event organisers will go for.

Questions:-
3. Players - what are the main "problems" you have with refs and how would you like them to behave towards you?
Field Position, having 3 each side and one in the middle of the field is nice but not when its 5on2. knowing where to look and what to look for is important too. if its a field where people are hitting corners with some big lanes then look for those shots on the break etc

Inactivity, some refs just dont/wont/cant be bothered to get in there and get in the thick of it and would prefer to call a hit from the sideline (being told afterwards "sorry i saw the ball hit you and presumed it broke" doesnt really do it to be honest. happened twice this season) on the other hand there are those refs that love supermanning in the middle of games :)

harsh calls, inconsistancy in my eyes is player perception so trying to teach that to some extent is a waste of time. i would say consistancy is sticking to the rules. do that and its always gonna be consistant from a reffing point of view, from a player point of view our always gonna get someone who doesnt agree.

1. yes but only punters in woodland
2. personally i would prefer to play
3. I think there are both good and bad refs, like people have said, some dont like to get in the thick of it and make bad calls, but there are some awesome refs who run straight through someones lane, check you to see its bounced, let you play on and run straight back through the lane and they are amazing. I also like the refs that can put their hands up and say fair enough i made a bad call, it shows they know the mistake and should learn from it
4. Some players do let the sport down and argue with a bad decision do let the sport down, but most players do respect the refs, and i think refs should have more respect, they stand watching us have fun playing, and they make it as fair as possible, and without them we wouldnt be able to play without a lot of cheating
