Recruitment Drive

From NPPL.TV

"In honour of our men and women fighting overseas, we are privileged to have the marines as an NPPL sponsor. They will be on an information and recruitment drive as well as administering the color guard as part of the finals ceremony."

That strike anyone else as kinda weird, or is it just me?

Don't think that would go down well in the UK.

We are trying to get away from the militaristic side of paintball over here, I know you guys have a very different attitude over there btu I still don't think its a good idea.

Well...

SOME people have a different attitude over here. Most don't, and we certainly don't need to be associated with being militaristic.

Course, we don't need to be associated with being a buncha drunks either, but Budwieser is a sponsor....

Seriously though, I think there's a difference between being viewed as militaristic and being associated with the military. The military gets involved in lots of things in an effort to recruit new employees. I'd be happy to have them out at one of our events. (Well, we sort of already do have the military out at our events, as the USMA, USNA, USAFA, and the Citadel all have teams.)

Having the marines do a color guard type thing is harmless, even legitimizing. Color guards do their thing at all kinds of sporting events.

I'd say this is the marines letting their expectations lead them. I just imagine some recruiting sergeant getting all excited about going out and finding this place full of guys who already have a military adventure fantasy he can co-opt... and then he finds a bunch of tournament players. Oops. I didn't know you guys wore such decorative attire...

This is the environment and association least likely to do damage, IMO. The people viewing the games are still going to get an accurate representation of the game we play. I am glad another outside sponsor signed on. It might help make this kind of huge high quality event financially sustainable.

Is it wierd? Bet your ass. Probably more so to us than any "outside witnesses" who come to the event. They already have this notion of us that includes us getting ready to shoot at people with real guns. The contrast can't hurt, though. Paintball is what it is.
