Hiya Stan. The PSP has not actually announced any new or different bunkers. All they have really said is that the field layouts will be designed with the larger back player in mind.
Thanks for mentioning that - I was questioning myself reading and re-reading the PSP announcement considering the physical size of the bunkers themselves and couldn't really see anything. Wasn't sure if I was just being an idiot.

I thought the implication was that we'll be seeing more mayas, tall cans, bricks etc at the back, as opposed to the little cakes in the corners ( that Paris corner was an arse! :) )

Personally, I like most of the PSP announcement with the exception of the field size increase, but the only reason I don't like that is because it means moving telegraph poles again! ;)

I think what is important (for all us event organisers) is to focus on is how to bring fun and value for money to the widest audience possible whilst still catering for the sporting elite and aspiring elite.
Hi Syd
You are correct insofar as some proportion of the larger bunkers will be placed more towards the back.
The new Sup'Air bunker for the PSP in 2011 will have nothing to do with the new design restriction. It's already done and it's a little A.
The larger field and design restrictions will only "dumb down" the competition environment. It cannot "still cater" because of the nature of the changes.

When I first started playing, Jim Frensham told me that paintball is simple, get as far up, as wide as you can and you'll shoot people across field. So wider fields makes it easier? Right? ;)
OK not quite, but I like the changes on the whole. Cater for the masses yet still keep that bit of crowd involvement and excitement with crowd-side coaching.
I think it'll make some interesting games with some players being more schooled in the art of being joysticked, and some being able to read a game well and playing without coaches. Both now have their places on the field almost dictated to them.

I only hope the field owners aren't affected by the size differences too badly. Perhaps the MS could do them the courtesy of making a decision asap so they can get on with extra works if needed.

I can imagine some fields that i've played at abroad will be fuming, particularly the ones bound by restrictions like the indoors in Scandinavia or some astro fields in Germany for instance

The fields are going longer aren't they? Not wider?

I think we have to acknowledge we have two conflicting issues here, one is the need to grow the sport by giving it a greater value for money thus consolidating our present customer base and also stimulating growth by making the standard format more attractive ..... the other is, endeavouring to maintain some semblance of paintball being a sport.
The latter has been pandered to for way past its 'sell by date' in my opinion .... the whole idea of trying to position paintball so it assumes a greater and greater resemblance to a sport is not only a lost cause but it's also inappropriate because it has been compromising our ability to keep players in the game and also provide parachute events for people migrating from the woods.

People who think about shuffling the coil of woodsball and coming over to the tournament side of things get smacked straight in the face and it's no wonder the harsh reality of our present formats provide a hostile reception.

As to the best thing to do?
Depends upon what you want really ... if you want a game that has some form of growth then the PSP's amendments will help, if not, you can keep what we have now and have ever decreasing numbers call themselves sportsmen ....

Hi Baca, the rest of my quote is probably my only reply to your comment on the PSP's decisions dumbing things down in your opinion...

Getting the balance right may well be the difference between a successful and non-successful series next year.
The difference, Syd, will be whether the so-called older self-sufficient player actually shows up in numbers that make a difference.

How long do you give the league to bring this player back into the sport? If they havn't done it at the end of this season, would that be grounds to call the attempt a 'failure'? After 2 Seasons?

A change in demographic would have to be 3-5 years in the making, surely?
