My view on them is that they are for the most part a waste of time.
They taste disgusting while also being incredibly filling.
1.In general there is very little need to use any form of protein bar/shake/supplement, it is all a marketing strategy.
You do need protein to help your muscles grow but you would be better off with something like 1 or 2 fresh chicken breasts maybe with whatever your favourite type of sauce might be, i like them with a pasta style and maybe some pasta or rice with it. This will also be good for carbs to help keep your energy high.
This meal will give you enough protein, is cheaper and tastes VASTLY nicer.
2.Also remember that the key thing to remember when eating protein to help with workouts is your must eat it 60-30 mins BEFORE the workout.
You probably see lots of people at the gym taking protein shakes etc after workouts they are NOOBS. They do not understand that you must leave your body time to digest and move the proteins into the blood so when you muscles need it i.e. after workout it is there waiting to be used. Rather than having to wait for the food to digest before they will be able to use it.
Feel free to ask me if you have any further questions.
1. i agree that fresh chicken breasts
or f.ex:
• Turkey breast
• Fish (baked or broiled)
• Lean steak
is a better protein source than supplements, but sometimes its easier to have some protein bar/shake/supplement in your bag or car. And easy access its better than no access in my opinion.
2. I may be in that NOOB category, but after a workout i do beleive you need to fill up again. Protein is the "building stones" - amino acids wich eventually can become more muscle mass. When you work out hard you "hurt" the muscle fibres, and that is when the proteins/amino acids helps to heel & repair the muscle fibers, called the anabolic process. In this process you also need some carbohydrates, which help to push the amino acids into the muscles for the healing & growth process.
It is all depending on a balanced diet to get the best result.
Its a long story about glucoses, insulin and the transportation of amino acids into the muscles. If your glycogen depots in the muscles are emptied, it is not a bad deal to try to fill it up again after a workout. And after a workout your body & the metabolism is still working on high gear.
I may be a NOOB but since the metabolism is still working after practice, i dont think its stupid to feed the body.
This section its hard for me to explain in english, so some of the words may be wrong.
At least it`s my opinion..
