Unifying formats is the DUMBEST IDEA EVER. Pick one. Or make a new one that makes actual sense. But please, please, please don't create some ****ty ******* half-and-half format for the sake of 'keeping something from both formats' that is ultimately going to suck.

Anytime someone suggests '7-man XBall!' I want to punch them in the face.

sorry, that was put badly - what i meant was, as you say, to create one unified tournament with one unified rules set. not necesarily as a hybrid of what already exists.

5 point match, highest scorer after the 5 points wins. This meant teams were guaranteed a certain number of points.

That's not real XBall.

In order for something to play like XBall, matches need to end by the clock running out in most cases. If matches regularly end because some arbitrary point threshold is reached, then you just have a best-of format, and you get all the problems you normally get with 3/5/7-man. You only have a certain number of games to play, so you can't afford to lose them. When it's the clock that ends games, the more aggressive you are, the faster the points run, and the more points you play.
