Having read through those comments i must conclude that ya'll (bar one) are stoopid. Paintballs are potentially lethal at close range if you are not wearing a mask. Now whilst i know what you mean, a reporter does not. It is irresponsible to say that they are not lethal when you know for a fact that they are because you wear a mask.
Indeed.

Let's get some things in order. A bouncing paintball will do more damage than one that breaks. Why? The breaking paintball absorbs some of its energy, a bouncing paintball will transfer all its energy into your body.

Who cares the article says bullets? That's words people can understand. If the article started yapping about blowback technology, open bolts, closed bolts and whatnot, Joe Schmoe wouldn't understand.

And don't be fooled into thinking that the gun used was a toy, just because somebody with very limited knowledge said it's made of plastic. To the untrained eye many of our top of the line gats look like plastic, because of the funny colours we use. I would not be surprised if it indeed were the guns stolen from recent events in Reading.

And a paintball can kill without shooting somebody in the eye. No problem. All of you numptied who say otherwise are just an accident waiting to happen.

Ginja - if you are going to use the thefts from the recent Reading NSPL event in your article, please contact me for accurate facts on the matter. It was two markers, not the higher numbers rumoured, though still unacceptable. Unfortunately, the thief is more likely to be a fellow baller than any 11 year old kids.

Also, generally to everyone who has contributed to this thread, I agree that the article makes some pretty wild statements about paintball, but I think it is important to remember that the actions of these 11 year olds and the idiots who sold paintguns to them are what has/will do the damage to paintballing, not the newspaper. Why the hell should the newspaper do indepth research in to paintballing for this small article which focusses on how a woman is upset about an assault on her daughter? They are simply quoting an individuals opinion and that individual is understandably pissed off with paintball. I think it is great that the paper has offered to publish an article about the other side of paintballing - props to them.

The underlying problem here is the uncontrolled supply of paintguns and paintballing equipment. These incidents bring attention to that problem and sooner or later, it is going to give us a right headache. Slagging off the newspaper and not really discussing the underlying issue on a public forum does not demostrate a responsible community attitude towards the problem if you ask me. And what if the newspaper (or someone else) picks that up and decides to run with another out-of-context story?

I guess my point is that we should be careful how we discuss these things in a public environment like these forums and not be so quick to lay the blame at the messenger's feet.

No offence mate but a helluva lot can kill without hitting you in the eye, does that make everyone a numpty for not hiding in a sealed room filled with bubble-wrap (although that has killed more people than paintballs).
So why are we an accident waiting to happen?
And still you still provide no evidence, none of you do, that a paintball can kill.
It may be the trigger for a heart-attack, or knock you off your feet and into a river... but so far not one person can say "See, a paintball killed this person"

Wasn't there some guy a few years back who died after being hit in the head by a paintball?

Also being hit in the throat could technically kill you, if it hits the right spot. My mum's an ENT nurse and i always get a proper lecture if i come back from ballin with a neck shot. If it hits that spot and you get swelling your fu*ked pure and simple. How many people have had shots to their adams apple and haven't been able to breathe for what seems like an eternity.

The big problem is paintball is still an infant as a sport. Physiologically speaking were not supposed to be hit by anything. Our bodies just dont like it which is why we bruise. Who knows? we could be doing ourselves some serious damage in the long run and we dont know about it, as there have been no signifigant studies determining how paintball affects us.

I can see both sides of the argument. Who's been killed by a paintball? Probably no-one. Has paintball been a factor in anyone's death. Plain and simple - yes it has. To tell people it definitely won't kill you is a lie imo. People should be aware of the danger but reassured that as long as they follow the rules they aren't in any danger.

demonic - your thinking as a paintballer, not as a member of the public or a journalist. All they will see is paintball killed a person, not Paintball triggers heart attack. In fact they're both as bad as each other and would be critically damaging to the sport in whichever country it happened i'd warrant. Cept america.
