Obviously this isn't for the old people, but they can put in their sagely advice. I am going to break this into three parts: a little about me and my schooling, my hints on how I get by, and (the most important part) how is this going to affect my paintball playing?
My dad was in the Air Force, so I attended about 9 different schools in 12 years. I never really tried hard in school, and I rarely paid attention. I just happen to retain information fairly well. I got accepted to a large state university, and I ventured out on my own to do well in school. I didn't. I joined a fraternity (Animal House anyone?), I was introduced to the greatness of beer, and 3 semesters later I failed out. My parents quit supporting me, and to avoid poverty I joined the US Air Force. From there, I worked tremendously hard and eventually got accepted to the Prep School, and now I go to the Academy. Hmmmm... a 22 year old freshman, not spectacular.
Now, as you can see, I failed in several points in my life. A) I never learned scholastic discipline B) My academic/social balance was way out of proportion abd C) I lost credibilty with my parents. OK, let me tackle these one at a time. I never studdied, and I still rarely do. Bad move. I really don't enjoy school (except for English and Lit), but I have to do it. I realized, in life, there is plenty of situations I do not like, but i have to do them. Do you think Robbo likes to interview LaSoya? Hell no!! But, he does it because it is his job. As students, it is our job to get good grades.
My academic and social scale has always been one sided. I could tell you the time I went to my Calculus final in college so hung over I had leave in the middle of the test to puke... but I won't, this is a family site. I am not saying every person has to stay in their room and burn laser beams into their Chemistry books. My roommate last semester did that and he cracked a couple of times. There is a high attrition rate at my school (17% of class has already left), and this is what I tell them when they go off to civilian school. Study diligently Sunday through Thursday afternoon. Let loose on Thursday night through Saturday.
Last for this part, I lost major credibilty with my parents. Unfortunately, parents usually control the purse strings. I abused that privelage. Basically, the $22,000 my parents spent on me going to college was an investment in me learning to chug beer really fast (I will crush any of you Brits), and a learning experience. Pretty damn expensive if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I love my parents. None of us would be where we are if it wasn't for our parents. But, DAMMIT, I have to still listen to them nag me over the phone about my grades. If I would have just done my schoolwork everything would be blissfull. Fortunately for me I am repairing that burned bridge.
Alright, now the best part. How will getting good grades affect me playing paintball? For you all still in highschool, that parent bit is uber important. You would be amazed how much leverage you can get with your parents if they see you studying ONE hour a night. "Mom, if I get all A's and B's this semester, can you help me out in getting that new cocker I showed you (oh yeah, always go to mom when asking for anything!)." When I was in college, failing, I couldn't squeeze a dime from my parents. Now, I am getting A's, B's, and the occasional C and my mom is offering me an Excalibur! High school students, believe me when I tell you this, and the graduates and college students can agree, you will have NO money in college. If you can finnagle your parents for a $100, that is a case of paint and field fees for a weekend (or beer for two weekends). Last, if you do well in college you will get a good job. Good job = money. Good marker = Expensive. There is a direct correlation to the better job you have and the better markers you wll have. So go to college to buy better markers, or something like that.
Now people like Robbo throw off this whole article. He has a kick ass job, I would imagine he gets paid resonably well, and (from what I read) his bicepts are bigger than his head for a reason. Alas, we cannot all be like Robbo. We have to work our regular jobs to support our habits. Mine is paintball and beer (again, I say I will crush any Brit at this facet of my life). I am working hard in school to get a great job. I hope the students out there get a little something out of this. Don't be like me, finish college in 4 years, not 8 like me. I am now going to go beat my head with my Russian book. I hate that class SO much! Yet, I have to do it. Incidently, because of this class I am going to play Russian Legion someday and bunker all of them. See you all on the field... after I hit the books of course
