if you want to be able to continue playing into your late 20's with no joint problems then yes!

pads are a necersary evil, you will seldom play on turf that will provide you any level of protection if you land heavy- you'll end up with friction burns on your knees and elbows and if you're particulary active your hips too. and if you land bad you could seriously bust up your knees or elbows.

It aint worth the risk

And as a side effect- pads add an element of bounce to your arms as well.

I suggest you have a look at the Proto or Dye range- several years of development have gone into these ranges now and they protect and stay put like pads should- they look nice too.

Pads on elbows are essential, slide shorts and knee pads imo are less important.

Elbow pads will enable you to land on your elbows when diving much easier, they will stop grases to the elbow, lower arm and palm of the hand on some makes of pads. (Eclipse elbow pads i have found are the best for this)

Knee pads and slide shorts are less necessary imo, with the latter being slightly more important, you should never put that much pressure on your knees that you will need extra padding that a decent pair of pants will not give you.

It does depend on how old you are and how the ol' joints are holding up. I am 17, have never had any joint problems so only wear elbow pads. However if you are older have a dodgey knee, or think you are putting too much pressure on your knees, then knee pads are probably best.

At the young age of 17 I should hope your knees are fine. But playing without protection will lead to problems in later life trust me.

For about £50 go get the lot, That way you will not look back in years to come and say I wish I had used them.

Elbow pads are a definate if you ever intend on performing an imitation of the superman dive :D Im in need of a new pair as my current ones have completely worn through at the elbow and so I have an ever recurring scab due to the friction taking the old ones off, and hard ground in the summer just making them plain worse.
Knee pads, i've never used but I am going to invest in some as the summers hard ground is starting to show on my knees too.

Slide shorts are more a personal preferance I feel, but of course keep the meat and veg relatively safe :)

Plus of course, who can complain about a bounce?

you wouldnt even get me on a field without knee pads on....you cant walk without your knees so why risk messing them up?

arm pads are more of a bounce thing, tho they do take the hit a little if you cock up a landing

Pads

Ok Guys

Anyone saying that knee pads are not required in this sport are *******. If your 17 you think your knees are going to last forever well think again. I'm 37 & trust me when i say Knee pads are a major piece of kit. You get used them while playing anyway.

Years ago we used to play in woods , but the game has transformed into a fast pasted moving game where you need to slide, dive or whatever. I love the sport so much more now then i ever did 13 years ago. So trust me when i say :-

PADs are essential to your equipment!

My views are my own, so if you don't like them don,t read them

Cheers
