Ancaster Paintball had to call off the PA event on Sunday because of health and safety concerns with raising and securing the nets, it was a decision that the PA fully endorsed and agreed with on the day.
We was informed on the Saturday that because of overnight winds that they was expecting the site manager decided to put the nets up in the early morning. (Something they have done several times so we was not concerned at all)
The Manager arrived on site at 4am with other staff to do just that and after waiting for the wind to die off he called me at 5.15 to inform me of his current inability to do the job because of the weather but was ready and waiting to do it as soon as it had calmed down. I asked if it would be ok and he was still confident that if they had 45 minutes respite from the wind the nets would be up.
I arrived on site at just gone six and the weather was terrible, so we (myself and the site manager) went to the site office and called the local RAF base to ask the metrological department what the local weather outlook would be for the next few hours, we managed to speak to them at 7.10 and they said that the wind would stay up to six hours with gusts in excess of 30mph, the rain would remain heavy for about 3 hours with continuous rain for the rest of the day.
At that point it was apparent no nets would be able to be put up that day without putting people in danger, so the Manager did the right thing and called of the event, and I went to the team Managers and told them of the decision that had been made.
Nobody disagreed with the decision made and indeed supported what had been done after I had told them who we had talked too.
That are the facts of what happened on the day, but we now have to decide what we do to replay the lost day.
We have had several suggestions so please consider them all – or even suggest another if you wish for consideration by the team managers who will make the final decision. (as long as it is viable)
