Orange broadband

Thinking of changing my broadband. My mate who lives down the street is on Orange, and he says it's pretty good. Is anyone else on Orange and would they reccommend it?

Thanks!
Right. Well I think I am fairly qualified to respond to this, though for obvious reasons, I can't state why.

Don't go on Orange.

With ADSL, you get what you pay for, unless it is with SKY, in which case you tend to get more than you pay for.

If I didn't get my broadband free, I would be on SKY.

Cheap broadband is throttled to fack at any time that normal people want to use it. The service provider rents a "Fat Pipe", that has say 32Gb capacity. The more users they can get on it, the better...so your speed goes down.

Fibre, such as Virgin Media is the best bet in most cases.

Of the High Street brands, BT Broadband is pretty good, SKY is good etc.

LLU circuits, are where teh service provider has it's own equipment in the local exchange and doesn't have to rent it from BT Wholesale.

SKY have their own equipment in many exchanges, and so will offer you 2mg (now £5 a month), upto 8Mb and up to 20mb(£10 I think?) over their equipment. If they don't have their own kit, they have to rent of BT Wholesale and will charge you about £17 a month for whatever the exchange can provide.

BE Unlimited are another top choice, if they are in your exchange.

ADSL is dependent on line quality. This usually means line length, but a short line could be comprised of aluminium conductors and thin copper and be sh!te but a long line could be all copper and be thick, and be really good.

There are things that can be done to improve circuits. The longest part is usually the part from the exchange to the cabinet (green box), known as the E side. Not all E sides are made equal as there are often more than one E side cable to a cabinet, which could mean that you get a real crap one, when the next cable over is really good and make several megs worth of difference.

So choose between SKY and BE Unlimited, check their websites for availability in your area. There are certain internal issues that can be dealt with as well.

A long line does not like lots of internal wiring, or star wiring, or SKY boxes, alarm systems and what not...there are things that can be done and that is what PM's are for....:D

Line length wise. 0-3km should offer 7-8mb on an upto 8mb service or 14-20 on a 20mb service 3-4km about 5mb, 4-5km about 3.5mbit, 5-6km 2-3mbit
