Rodney's comments don't really surprise me. They do underscore how far from being truly professional the sport is at this point. I suspect Lang's decision to change teams has more to do with personal growth and additional opportunities than just the salary. Dye has said they want Ollie to be the new face of Dye. I expect Ollie will get significant incentives based on sales and performance, plus greater individual visibility. In the long run, this will be worth far more than just the salary bump he's getting from the move.

I think Ollie did the right thing in moving. It may hurt Dynasty in the short-term, matching Dye's offer could have had greater long-term impact to Dynasty. If Ollie gets a bigger slice of the pie, that means everyone else gets a smaller slice. Over time, that imbalance could breed serious dissention in the ranks.

Is Ollie the best in the world? I don't think there's much arguement there. But, is he twice as good as everyone else on the team? Here's where things get sticky. How many players of that caliber are going to accept that they're worth only half of Ollie? Particularly when you think that they all came up together. It might be easier on a new team that has less history playing with Ollie to accept the salary imbalance.

Dave's no mug and what Shamu writes is bang on the money.
Whatever Dave paid Ollie, you can be sure Dye will see that as an investement that will pay huge dividends for both parties.
As I said before, when the coolest paintball player joins the coolest paintball company, it's just gotta be cool :)

Actually when Dave did the deal with Ollie, he never once said he had to join the Ironmen, all he said was that Ollie had to endorse Dye products wherever he went and gave him free licence to join any team within the Dye stable which included Ironmen, Aftershock and Nexus as their 3 premier pro teams.

Oh my gawd...he coulda come to Nexus. he might have asked me but I would have had to turn him down because I've already taught him all he knows, I ain't going over all that again :)

Hang on, where did all this "Ironmen" talk come from in the first place? I'm just trying to remember who first said the actual team "Ironmen". So it's been established he's now an employee of Dye (for want of a better description), and that he therefore must play for any team under the Dye umbrella, but does that deal mean he'll only play for a singular team? Surely there would be more info on the specific team he'd be playing for if one had actually already be decided?

Or am I up the wrong tree without a paddle?

Would Dave have been ok with Lang shooting an Ego?

Ollie is doing the contract with Dye not the Ironmen and he can play with pretty much who he likes within the Dye stable but it makes more sense to stay with one team.
He has therefore chosen the Men, a natural choice I think since the team is basedd in San Diego Cali (where Oli lives ) with Aftershock in Chicago and Nexus in UK.
It's a nice thought he could have come over but had as much chance of happening as I have of winning a nobel peace prize.

Ollie would not be able to shoot the Ego Sam, now that's silly Sam...come on mate .. :)

I doubt he would be playing for Nexus but he's friends with a few of the guys on the team so you never know but I doubt it.

What seals the deal, the icing on the donut as it were is the erm.......donuts.
Donuts won't cut it Mark - there is no real sacrifice in buying a bag of donuts, and for a player of Pipers stature, you need to make sacrifices, if you want him on your team!

I know what will seal the deal - but I won't tell..... I'll just be on my way, quitely humming the Scissor Sisters hit "Gonna take your Momma out tonight".... :D:D:D

Hi
I just wanted to share some of MY own thoughts about Ironmen to my European fellows!

I can tell that when Dave gathered us (Ironmen) together saturday morning just before our team practice started and told the news, no-one didn't know what to say! You could just see a big smile on everyones face!

After Rich and buddies left Ironmen couple years ago, Dye's been building Ironmen step by step to get back there where it belongs, 1st place. Ironmen has been rebuilding roster, which includes players who are great persons and players. Last year rebuilding was no less than Billy Cerancky, Todd Adamson from shock. They might not be media sexiest players, because, they just don't give a s**t! They just play paintball because they love it and they are great players! Later last year J.P. wanted to rejoin the team, and right in first tournament he was blowing RL away from snake. And of course they brought me over from Russian Legion, giving me a great job at Dye and Ironmen and arranged me sport visa to live in States, which is probably the first Sport visa ever because of paintball! Now this year we got no less than a best player in the world; Ollie Lang. B-short (definately a player to look after, every top team in So-Cal wanted him to roster) joined back in the team and Ryan Williamson (one of the best middle players around) came over from Aftershock! Then think about the players who were already there like Billy Wing (on my top 5 best players in the World, Player I learn every practice a lot), E-Rob, Bryon Benini, Robert Scott (Amazing back player), Zyzek and the new hungry players like Josh Hill...

Everyone thought I was crazy when I went to Ironmen from Russians. Opinios started to change as we won NPPL semi pro division and did ok in NXL, but we will see this year what Ironmen really is... I can quarantee that this team is total unit, hungry and ready to give everything to be no 1. And guess what we also have the best company in paintball backing us up 100%.

It's going to be interesting season!
