I wonder if the Millennium are actively trying to f**k up European Competitive paintball?
The PSP sit down, have a think and make some changes that are not 100% popular, but at least make a lot of sense in terms of their aims.
- Making the fields longer & re-thinking the bunker placement - giving the older/slower guys a chance to compete again.
- Eliminating Coaching from the pit-side - lessens the impact of coaching without reducing crowd participation
- Not releasing the field plans - makes teams work on their skill base, not become field drones.
I'm not so convinced on the first point, but it does make sense in some respects, and the other points all seem very reasonable and thought out.
Then the Millennium chime in with their take on things.
- Revoking Spotter Privileges / No spectator side "Coaching" - Why? So a team can send players to that side but they will be about 4 feet back from the netting - yeah that's gonna stop them. Far better to follow the PSP's lead and control the pits better imho.
- Improved Game Format for Division 3 - This is good for the players and making the format a proper lead-in to Race-to-4, but will increase dead time on the field which could knock a tight schedule on it's ass, so I'm kind of 50/50 on this I guess.
- Field Size Adjustment, increasing width but not length - this is plain dumb. Making the fields squarer will means corners will be harder to make, needing faster, younger players to do so - the very kind of player that is already in short supply. Also making the fields wider will mean quicker games as players get pinched out faster, alienating the players who already think that there isn't enough field time in a modern race-to match.
- Continuing to release field designs in advance - why? Do the Millennium think that not releasing the field design will have a detrimental effect on field sales? Or are they just listening to the PBNation kiddies who hate having to think for themselves on a Thursday before the event (and incidentally, don't play in Europe, hell most of them don't even play PSP!)
It's been proven time and time again that even if the field is released in advance, even small alterations in the actual set up at an event mean that a lane is not there or a new one is, and all having the field design does is stop players from working on their skills and promotes endless scrimmaging.
Why Millennium? Why not keep the field design under wraps (we all know that some teams get the design earlier than others anyway - anyone else remember that Tonton's NT video from a couple of years back)?
