Just about all tournament paintball in the UK used to be 10 man up until a few years ago, but teams were finding it harder & harder to get enough players together on the same date so more & more tournaments went to 7 man. 5 man was virtually unheard of here "in the old days".

I can even remember when Mayhem was a 15 man format!

Given the current state of the game 10-man is the way to go, then 7. However, as the format evolves the number of players on field will be reduced, hopefully no lower than 7 but they'll be playing X-ball in August at IAO with sides of 5. Depending on how that works out may be a preview of the future.
(And for those who don't see or expect any significant on field differences I'd be willing to bet Robbo has been burning some brain cells lately working out how the format will alter both strategy and tactics.)
