From having done this to a 'Cocker body to convert it to vert. feed, I recommend that the welder use slightly too much material for the weld. It will be bumpy no matter what but if you have plenty of extra material, you can grind and buff it down so it looks a little prettier than if there was just this bare weld. Just a suggestion.

welding

if you go the welding route then ask for a "Concave fillet weld" or "Fillet weld with smooth blended face".

a good welder should know what you are on about. These types of weld are the best for the results you wanna achieve and are nicer to look at than just a normal fillet weld.

I would post the weld symbols on here, but i can't seem to create them with this text!

good luck

i have the same problem, and what you wanna do....

i recently got an old style impulse, and you need to get some Loctite 330, and activator, from a hardware store, use some emery paper to prime and clean the surface, then put some loctite 330 on either the feed tube or the hole, and spray the activator on the other. Then push together for 3-4 mins. job done.
Also welding can be quite dodgey unless you know a specialist aluminium welder, otherwise to get a skilled alu welder to do it will cost alot of £££.
