look on the classifieds and contact some of the sellers, meet up at a tournament and get to have a go. if you like it, go for it.
You'll never get a definitive "buy this marker it's great" answer on here, as we all have our own opinions. I don't think many will argue that for a new starter, a second hand marker from a tourney player who's trading up is hard to beat. As for type, a second hand shocker/cocker/impulse etc.. will out-perform a new marker at the same price, so go for a second hand marker on CO2 now, about £200 then get a decent hopper then a freak set or similar when your set, then trade up to air, then start adding the extras. I know a couple of players who's markers have kept improving as they have. If it turns out that you hate paintball, then sell it on, you'll have more look shifting a quality second hand marker for anything near what you paid, than trying to sell a marker you bought brand new. A second hand cocker at £200 this week is still worth that next week, a brand new spyder today is worth a helluva lot less next week. (Not criticising the spyder, it'd be the same for any marker).

If youre a newbie I would just get a Spyder...

Afterall, if youre new to the sport, not much point spending £200 more than neccessary for a marker you wont push to its limits (like a Cocker or mag or whatever).

And with a Spyder you can easily upgrade it as you get more into the sport, electro trigger, regs, etc, and then dump it and get a more upmarket gun when youve outgrown it.

No need to spend a fortune, get a second hand cocker/mag etc.. on CO2, upgrade it if you love it, sell it on if you don't. If you're going to play tourney, you'll outgrow most of the lower end guns in your first tournament.

All good advice so far, but (shameless plug inbound), I have a Bling Bling Ir3 Fly up for sale, completly acceptable for a beginner, yours for a bag of sand o.n.o. If you buy this marker I'll throw in the Angel AIR for a Penny!

In the words fo the Virgin Mary, come again!!!

learn to drive before you buy a sports car
Buy yourself a spyder or clone use it when you go rec balling or the odd walk on and see if you like the sport. If you decide it's not 4 you except on rec days, you still got your own marker to show off with to your mates. If you decide you like it the upgrade to something better. Whilst you are testing the water you will get to see the other markers out there on you can decide which one you like and save up for it, either new or 2nd hand.
I did it that way and I certainly don't regret waiting, because I've got what I need not what other people think I should have.
