Hi,
Just wondering using my workload as an IT technician :p could the UKPSF (or someone else) get people who pay a small fee ( couple of quid unless ukpsf member?) send their marker details ie serial number ,colour ( as I assume this doesn't change too often) type etc. so that if
1) if its lost in transport somewhere the police can contact someone and say I've got this paintball kit serial number XXXX whos is it?
2) a shop can ring the ukpsf and say that they have a marker that is second hand serial numner XXX is it nicked? ( like a hpi thingy for cars)

What do you think?
Won't stop the tea leafs but may make it a little harder for people to sell the nicked stuff?

actually John this is something that's been getting bounced about for quite a few years now... even remember talking about it in the days when pumps & stick feeds were the "in" thing.

It would have to be voluntary and the question has always been...who's going to set it up and run it? The UKPSF is the logical choice but I think Bully has quite enough on his plate already. Could the UKPSF pay someone to do it? Sure if all those people & sites who aren't members got off their arses and joined up. As it stands the UKPSF doesn't even pay Steve for all the hard work and effort he puts in...

Of course if you wanted to offer your services on a voluntary basis...

It is a good idea but I think what will ultimately kill it is paintballer apathy...too much hassle to register and paintballers are in the majority basically bone idle and apart from a few just simply wouldn't bother.

Still if you really want to try and get something off the ground we can talk about it :)

Hmm.
I'd set one up and run it, but the problem might be if, shops/ people wanted an instant answer, i'd do it for free too, perhaps if philip was willing to "sponsor" or recomend a decent web host it could be online? with only certain details, ie you search and it says nicked?
or alternatively what about the EPA (scheme to take over the world!!) as then if they are nicked at places like CC or portuagal shops in europe can check to?

Also I'm probably going to talk to the local police as my bike is Alpha tagged (I think its called that little chip with post code) to see what kind of system is avalible and if that can be changed.

Skeetmaster, not bad ideas I actually like them. I'll offer my services. hopefully hatts is wrong about apathy ( although I hate to admit I think he's right)

See what happens when I don't play for a few weeks?!! I think!!

help me!

You can buy little pots, of Alpha dots from some places, not sure where, then you just dab them on your kit, they stay put, and you could put thousands on one bit of kit, you could never find them all.

I dont think my ideas would really be too difficult, or expensive to impliment, also, who in their right mind would NOT want to register for a certificate? Only someone, who doesnt want anyone to know they have a marker...and who would that be?

ah didn't know you could buy the alpha dots, do you know how they work?
And I agree this won't stop fools doing anything like what was done in the other thread, but I personally would like my kit registered.
You're ideas are good, the certificate, that would have to be fairly complex/ holographic, to help prevent forgery ( time to contact friends in the print business!) worked out that using the inter 100 package on bti-hosting it would take 35 ballers a year to pay a pound! to get a host fully capable of doing what we need, perhaps, I'll pay for that out my own pocket, if enough ballers are interested.

Anybody who owns site level kit if you could let me know if they have serial numbers? then I'm sure a few sites would like to know that if ( hopefully this will never be used) they have kit nicked, then a decent shop, will check and see its nicked and return it to the owner? maybe take a few details from the person who traded it and pass these to the police?

anyway, if anybody ( tournament players, rec-ballers etc) would like to chat or ask questions then feel free to either ask here or at wilsonjc@ntlworld.com

Not sure how they work, but they all have a serial number (per batch).
As far as forgerey goes, all the Cert would carry would be basic details, including name etc and Cert number, photo, could have a hologram, probably be credit card sized...the rest of the info (password maybe, or whatever) including details of markers, purchase date etc...would be on the data base, so, any forger, would have to know, potentially all the other info related to that cert number.
