An Official Response
Just to prove that we do come down from our Ivory Tower some times I'd like to give an official response to this thread.
The initial post from 'WingNut':
“Isn't it about time....??
That this site was updated with a newer VB version???
I mean, ALL the other forums have much better looking sites.......
This one is still running 1 hour behind on the clock.!!!!! It's been nearly a week since they went forward......!!!
Over on the AOG forum you can leave feedback about individuals on their profile and all sorts.
Just my opinion..... anyone else......”
Yes there are newer versions of VB (Vbulletin) out there and some do have additional functionality such as “ feedback about individuals on their profile and all sorts”. Good, glad we got that sorted out! And yes we could spend time, which coincidentally is money in a commercial environment, improving the site to newer versions of VB. Hey when we're at it we could also hack the script to pieces and end with a forum that does everything bar make the tea. But why? Better user experience, yeah I'll go with that, but wait a minute, I've no longer got a home and the wife's left me – mmh let me think about that.......no, everything has to be balanced. Good karma doesn't pay the bills.
What I find really funny.... users on the Internet are so lucky, were else can you moan about a service which you use for hours and hours of entertainment and amusement but actually pay nothing for it! It would be interesting to see how many people would have their hands in the air for a paid service – talk about bells and whistles, we could have the latest edition of the magazine online and a forum which is so cutting edge you'd have to stock up plasters every time you logged on. But wait, pay – on no, nothing's worth paying for online, it's free isn't it?
OK I've had my rant, feel much better now....
And you thought I was finished. Whilst responding I'd also like to make reference to comments made by Philip, re. PhpBB.
Phpbb is an excellent open source forum script. However, making the decision to change from any board to another is never taken lightly. It's not a 5 minute job and there are many issues to address, not least of all the old forum data which you'd want to transfer – currently in the region of about 350MB. And again, what for? Yes, it may work better behind the scenes, it may not. Either way, the user experience is generally the same – you can post and respond to messages. So, lots of work, maybe some behind the scenes improvements, possibly a better user experience – although the last point is debatable, we'd probably have a large amount of people moan about moving – and for what, good Karma, can we at least exchange that for air miles?
To finish and sort of sum up. I'm interested to note that the Philip (blimey some 2882 posts), also uses the forums as a free advertising vehicle for BTI Design, who coincidentally are a web hosting company. I guess we need more people like Philip offering us free hosting in return for the free use of our forums, and maybe then we can improve the service we provide to you all..............
Have a nice day
Now, back to Ivory Tower, it's cold and smelly down here and I don't like it.
