I think it's a mater of people wanting their sig to be "Sig of da month" in PGI. So bigger is better, methinks.

A meg is 1048576 bytes, or 1024 kilobytes.
Unless you want to listen to the damn french, who insist that "kilo" and "mega" should only be used for factors of 1000, and have renamed the kilobyte and megabyte to "kibibyte" and "mebibyte"...
