but seriously, japan is bigger than the uk and is 4 islands (as i remember). Also is there a faultline around japan that would cause that

Yes! Has it not occurred to you that "tsunami" is a Japanese word? Japan sits right on one of the most active plate boundaries on the planet, hence the frequent large earthquakes. Japan exists only because it is formed by a string of volcanoes on this plate boundary, which also explains why most of it is too mountainous to be inhabitable.

i know that, but i assumed a plate boundrie would have to be away from the japanese coast to cause a tsunami... who hasnt heard of the kobe earthquake?
