Yes! Has it not occurred to you that "tsunami" is a Japanese word? Japan sits right on one of the most active plate boundaries on the planet, hence the frequent large earthquakes. Japan exists only because it is formed by a string of volcanoes on this plate boundary, which also explains why most of it is too mountainous to be inhabitable.
