and I believe the populated areas of Australia are minute compared to the outback/bush

A satellite in geostationary (35,786 km above the earth so stays in a syncronised orbit with a specific point on the surface) orbit would not be able to see the entire planet (think GPS), then again it could have been a group of satellites that took the data imagery.
