Safety Warning - :) Just to give an example, the one time my uncle was cutting some
pvcu cladding with a blunt blade. He was off work for the day and was at home alone (auntie gone out). So... he put his knee on the work bench and cut down the plastic cladding on da workmate (bench). He slipped and put the knife right through his entire upper thigh. He quickly held it together with electric tape (wicked stuff for cuts or open wounds :D) and called the ambulance. :D Dont cut towards yaself and/or with a blunt blade!

 painful me thinks

no, skyball in canada had carpet on the floor and it aparently was not paintfall, and was great for slides.

sand would be great to, Huntingdon beach NPPL was played on the beach, few complaints there. Saw dust would not be any better than sand in terms of gun wear.

how about fake grass? or astro turf?

I was originally proposing an idea to someone i knew but we both went on to other things and never got round to trying it out..

They use it for all sorts of playing fields and gardens.

Ok to answer both posts. Yes Skyball had carpet and no it wasn't painful sliding on it. However the carpet was reused from the previous year and the paint made it very slick in some areas and the result being that on some fields new carpet was installed. Skyball had also used Astro turf at the first event (the good kind not the hard if that is the right word kind used at Campaign) it was great for slides and for grip even in trainers. After the event it was hosed down and "looked" nice and clean, then it was rolled up and put away.
Skyball is a sports arena that has many different sporting and non sporting events held there..anyhow when the astro turf was rolled out again to be used by the resident american football team (it was the practice astroturf that had been used) the players fell over and slipped and they were wearing proper astroturf boots...what had happened was the astroturf hadn't been hung up for long enough to let all the paint run out, it was sitting at the bottom waiting to be stirred up...so that is why regular (well industrial grade) carpet was used from the second event onwards.
There is an indoor site in the Chicago suburbs called Country Club Paintball and they have a sorta mix between astroturf and carpet, it is actually marked with tennis lines but that is what they use and once per month they hose it down with pressure washers but it is so so slick almost immediately.
Sand or fire treated sawdust (it does exist) would be the next best alternative.
The stuff that you see in childrens playgrounds is the same as the running track at Crystal Palace it is called Tartan and it is a rubberised, textured surface and would cost thousands to put on a floor for an indoor paintball arena. You could look a the lino style stuff they use in nightclubs and behind bars that has a non-slip stuff mixed through it (I say stuff as at one time it was metal filings  ) but that would to be very expensive
