In your opinion, is paintball closer to Soccer or "war?"

A non paintballer friend asked me why I wear soccer cleats instead of army boots, after all "That's what they wear in real war."

Personally, I think it's closer to soccer... Think about it. You run around on a soccer like field, and do sports type things... IE practicing. And when I say soccer I don't mean specifically JUST soccer, it could be other sports as well.

Yeah ... it is alot like soccer ... you have your forewords (who, take all the credit) your midfielders (who do most of the running) and the back players (who do the most work) ... No goalie tho ...

It's also a bit like american football ... I mean both teams bascilly line up one team ends up playing offensivly and the other more defensivly (it can't really be helped) and you play till you cn get to the other teams end zone. or maybe that makes it more like rugby cuz you dant stop after each play ... It's definalyt not like criquet or baseball tho ... those sports are kinda boring ... and golf ... I can't believe peolpe watch golf on tv ...

All it depends on the type of paintball you are playing really.

Rec/Scenario : this is much MUCH closer to war then soccer, i mean, it based on war type situations after all, this is what recball trys to emulate. A battle type situation with (normally) no "real" injuries/casualites. This gives the punter the experince of been in a war.

Sup/Speedball : much closer to soccer. even sides, playing on a big field with inflatable stuff, trying to tag players in order to achieve a win, and get points, a win etc.

Two sides of the coin. :)

When I saw the original post my mind immediately went to American Football.
But you know Micah, you're wrong about there being no similarities with cricket. Not only is that one of the few other sports where you try to remove members of the opposition from play, often achieved by striking parts of their anatomy with a ball of some kind, but you can get some serious bruises from the aforementioned balls & some teams aim for the body intentionally.:D :D

I just ment that it's boring. IMO

Explaine to me how this removal of players works. I always though the object was to earn the most ends or over or something by hitting the ball with the pattle away from the ppl on the other team then running back and fourth between the two things and that's how you scored points. And the way the defending team gets the hitter/runner out is either the bowler (bowler right?) trys to get the ball past the hitter (? no better name for him that I know) inorer to knock ofer the wood thing stacked behind him. Or if the guy hits the ball, the otehr team must field it and knoce the wood of the end that the guy is runnign to down with it or hit him with the ball. Oh ... is that what you were talking about?

Rec gives the experience of being in war???

Dude, war is hell - people pay good money to play rec.

Most sports are a form of ritualized combat - helps us big-balled males blow off some testosterone...don't make soccer or b-ball like war does it?

Oh Tyger, I think this thread is waiting for you...

I'm afraid soccer sometimes looks a lot more like war in this part of Europe than any paintball I've ever seen.
Good thing too, or else people will start tearing through the netting to have a go at the away team. :D

It's called a bat, & the "hitter" is called a batsman. That's sort of vaguely right, though there are many other ways to be "out" like the ball being caught. The ball is bowled at up to 80-90 mph at the batsman so if they miss it & it hits them it can cause severe bruising. People have been knocked out by being hit on the head (despite protective helmets) or over the heart, and there was one rather yukky incident when a guy was hit on the nose which promptly broke, & they had to take shards of bone out from where they were embedded in the ball
It's also a surprisingly tactical game, but I can understand that if you don't know whats going on it can be boring as it can seem slow at times. Could be worse - I know people that are addicted to watching bowls! And I can't watch golf for more than 10 minutes.
