The difference between a mechanical gun and a electronic gun is huge, especially with an Icon:
Availibilty of parts (Spares available everywhere for any of the latest guns, cant say the same for Icon)
Speed of firing (There is less trigger pull on an electro gun as all you have to do is hit a switch)
Customer service (Places everywhere that will fix alot of electro guns, not Icons though)
Trained techs (Easy to find some bloke that knows how an Ion works, harder for an Icon)
There are 2 main types of ball in the UK, Woodsball, playing in the woods, or Sup'Air, playing on a field full of inflatable bunkers.
I recommend you give both a try and see how you like them. Go to a walk on day and you are bound to find a big bunch of helpful people who are willing to give you advice, and maybe even let you play with their guns for a game so you can get a feel for them.
Typical walk on days for either woodsball or sup'air tend to run about 10-15 for entry, and 25-35 for a box of paint, depending on grade.
2nd hand guns are available on this very site, in the classifieds section. Get some advice on what to have as your first shooter, and then look for that in the classified or post up a wanted thread in the wanted board.
For a first shooter, I'd recommend an Ion.
Can run on CO2 as long as you got an anti-syphon, and its a gun that requires low maintenance, is simple to operate, simple to maintain, and shoots fairly well for its price.
Its only disadvantage is its cheap build materials, the metal seems to be made of playdough
It is still a brilliant gun to buy, get used to working with, get your knowledge and skills up in the paintball world, and then run it into the ground and buy something a bit more high end.
