Unfortunately the political process is only as good as the electorate and the electorate is frighteningly ignorant for the most part. In a representative democracy you get the politicians you deserve.Originally posted by manike
Believe it or not, I've sometimes thought that if I ever became ludicrously independently wealthy (yea I know ) that I would become a politician to try and actually do something for the people and sort out some of the crap that is detracting from the potential of our country.
<SNIP>
and thus the only people that hope to make politicians are holier than though geeky idiots (I'm just missing the holier than though part...). And even most of them have some issues.
I'll accept "geeky" and "idiot" but accusing me of being a "politician" is inaccurate...Originally posted by TJ Lambini

Hey, no fair calling Hotpoint names like that.
Nope my comment on the electorate is based on the reasons given for voting a certain way by people when you go around canvassing them at electionsOriginally posted by TJ Lambini
You lost? That'll explain your first comment re: tha electorate then will it?
Busted...
Interestingly that would be bringing Democracy back to its roots as that was pretty much how it was done in Ancient Athens 2500 years agoOriginally posted by gyroscope
TJ, urban's point isn't necessarily fascist. You could do a lottery, make it sort of like jury duty: "Oh, man, I got drafted to the Senate." "Don't worry, dude, just say you are a racist or a pedophile and you'll get out of it"
I'm a facist? Sorry???.. and you'd even mention banning me for a difference of opinion.. pot.. kettle.. black.Originally posted by TJ Lambini
So you'd make folks who didn't wanna do it, do it wouldya?
Goddamned facist - go off and join tha Arnie Party buddy, cos your ass is banned!
Everybody does everything for selfish reasons. Even those who are seen as benevolent only commit seemingly "selfless" acts because of the feeling of well-being it engenders or the personal pain/ angst that would result if they did not. Freewill is largely a myth... we are the product of our genes and upbringingOriginally posted by Urban
My point is that anyone who actually wants power doesn't usually want it for benevolent, benificial reasons. The only difference they really want to make is to themselves. Don't forget the first rule of politics.. stay in power whatever!
Gross generalisation. Many only behave in what may seem at first glance to be ammoral ways because they think the end justifies the means. Lots of them go native and corrupt but that doesn't mean that's true for the majority. They just play the game and the rules are just like Machiavelli said they were (ie non-existant)Originally posted by Urban
Most politicians, as a rule of thumb in my opinion, would put their own personal desires over those of the country if the situation arose..
