Oxford English dictionary definition of a sport;

Sport n 1 Physical activity, esp. outdoor, for exercise or amusement. 2 particular form of this; game with set of rules.

Yes its official, paintball meets the criteria to be called a sport and therefore its participants are sportsmen and women.

Oh my God what am I doing encouraging students to play - oh well might keep them out of the pub...

Unfortunatley, it aint that easy! :(
Most universities take what is and isn't a sport from BUSA (British Universities Sports Association), who take their definitions from the Sports Council (now known as Sport England). There is (I am led to believe) currently an application to be recognised as a sport lodged with Sport England. Once they realise the truth, that is the first step.

Once paintball is officially a sport in the UK, BUSA will recognise it, and (hopefully) organise some sort of uni-championship.
However, BUSA will only run something like that if it has already been going for at least a year, which is why it would be way cool for the inter-uni event to happen this summer (if Dan 2 and crew at Durham Uni get around to forgetting about coursework, and start organising instead :p ).

Anyways, it's a couple of years away from universities having to recognise paintball as the sport we all know and love. All we can do is fight the fight, and raise the profile of tourney-ball in anyway we can.

Ooops, looks like the soap-box got brought out again! :D

Unis and stuff.

Well,

The Durham Uni team suffers from exactly the same problem, and as Flash said, if it isn't BUSA accepted most Uni athletic associations will touch you. My only suggestion is to accept society status and try and find support from other areas such as a sponsor site (Our 6th Element Sponsorship is what allows us to play). This is not usually because of any reason other than that the AUs are strapped for cash and oversubscribed already.

To get BUSA sponsorship a tournament is required, this we (Durham) hope to be running in the Summer at either 6th Element or on Uni grounds. After this, the next year BUSA may sponsor this tournament, after that it will be an official Uni sport.

So get in touch with our society paintball.society@Dur.ac.uk and we'll let you know whats going on.

Sorry I couldn't be more positive, but as Tony said, Paintball isn't really known as a tournament sport (unlike bridge, chess, tiddly winks etc  ) good luck to you though, do let us all know if you do manage to get Sport Status...

Good luck

Richard

Thanks for the help guys
at our uni you need 20 people join to become a society.
I don't know if i can get that many to join:rolleyes:
I might have to blag it and get 15 mates to pretend.
o well
Also i'm already dedicated to RDX so don't know if its worth the hassle.
At durham how did you get past the equipment problem?
I have some kick arse stuff but one marker isn't going to be much use.
Wait a minute i'll just kidnap the president of the uni :D
problem 2 - there is no paintball sites within 20 mintutes car journey
I'll let you know how it goes on

Kris

If you want to start a society at Lancaster I suggest you talk to the 27 lads who played at my site today. They all go to Lancaster University (one has his own kit!!) or talk to the 28+ who played on my site in October/November again from Lancaster University

We have several group each year from your University, so there must be enough to start a team- society
