Many thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply; at the very least it gives me an idea of the problems and success rates of others who have had the misfortune to suffer with this problem.

One of the doctors told me that one of my problems is that I 'look' fit which makes it even less likely I won't be offered any form of operation from the NHS this side of the next galactic expansion.

Still, I don't wanna tempt fate here and I'll wait and see what they offer me.
Thanks again guys, it's very much appreciated.

Hello Robbo

I have suffered with back pain since 2004. I suffer from upper back pain from the bottom of the shoulder blades to the bottom of the neck. The main problem is between c3-c5. They say I have narrowing spinal column were it compresses on the spine, with lumps on it (basic terms). I have been in for day surgery twice to have steroids injected near to the spine to help. I have been sent away for 2 weeks for intense physio twice and I still have the pain. If I don’t take the pain killers at night now I will wake with pain or no feelings in my hands. Last year I was on 13 tablets a day for the pain. At one point I was on 19. The physio say I have to keep moving the more I move the better I am and as my gp says I have arthritis of the spine If I stop I seize up. I have only got back to playing paintball this year ok I don’t run very fast but if you said to me you would be playing paintball in 2011 I would have laughed. I have tried everything the doctors /physio’s and consultants’ have thrown at me massage, acupuncture, hydro pools, infrared light, tens machines, mri’s x-rays even foot wear by looking at the soles of my shoes to see how they wear and how my back affecting my body, walking with a slight limp, angle to ease the pain. Some things have helped some haven’t at all.

We are all different and what will work on one many not on another. Sorry this may sound stupid as not knowing what you do as a job, do you have anything though work like an medical insurance policy, bupa to get employees back to work you could use.
I have not had full surgery I know someone who had an epidural into the spine and he said it was the worth thing he has ever felt.

Regards
Anthony

Hi Robbo,

Sorry to hear about the back trouble. I hope you do not mind me asking but is this on the NHS or via private health care with insurance.

My experience with the NHS and general surgery has been very poor as the opinion I have always seemed to get from them has been that they would rather partial fix a problem with ongoing less serious issues e.g. minor pain etc, rather than risk an expensive surgery which had a chance of causing more serious issues. So in general those getting surgery are those who cannot be even partially fixed non invasively e.g. removing a cancer, fitting a pace maker etc.

My experience with private health care has been that they are much more open to giving things a go if the benefits are potentially very high and they leave the decision with the patient about the risks associated with the surgery. If you have the option to look into private health care I would. Even if it is just for an initial consultation from an expert back/spine consultant. A quick google found this guy who seems to be very good (I have never used him or have any knowledge of him other than that on the page)Spinal Surgeon

If you have no insurance it could still be worth it as they will, in my experience, give you their opinion on the risks and they might be able to discuss multiple options to fix the issue that are not available to NHS doctors. Even if you just use the information to discuss with the NHS doctor.

I hope that is of some help. Get well soon.

John

Both my parents have had discs removed in their backs:

My mum had a disc removed from her lower back, she has good and bad days but on the whole she is a lot better than before the operation (however this was done in Germany - which is a private health system).

My Dad has had two discs removed from his neck and had a metal cage around the spine in that area to strengthen that area. Although he has little feeling in his left leg and other continued problems, the operation itself was a success, as he was minutes away from being permanently paralysed if he did not have the surgery. If it weren't for the great work done by the surgeons (which was done on the NHS) he would not have been able to walk me down the aisle.

What Robbo fails to mention is the reason his back has suddenly got worse. A few weeks ago he challeneged me to an arm wrestle and after I demolished him he needed some excuse to cover up the humiliating defeat.

Frikkin 'eck Jon, I ain't that bad; come to think of it though, I reckon I could still beat you when I'm dead .. either that or I might just pop round and rip one of your arms from its shoulder socker and take it home with me seeing as we've run out of dental floss ... :)
