Sorry if I sound like a complete dead head, my husband has just been introduced to the sport and has decided that he wants to get the whole kit. He was rather drunk on Saturday and brought himself a Tippmann A5 Stealth which arrived yesterday. It is impressive but we have been told that it may be too powerful to be used on normal sites. Basically there is fathers day and his birthday coming up and I would like to get him the kit but I do not want to get him the wrong stuff. I was hoping someone on here may be able to help. He has seen a mini that he wants as well but I would rather get him a good marker and everything else that he needs. Any help is appreciated and thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi,

Welcome to the forums :)

The A5 is a great starter marker, and should serve him well. The problem you're likely facing it not one of "power" but of sites not allowing people with their own gear to play on the same site as those that are rental customers. Some sites allow it, others dont, most have dedicated days/groups for people with their own gear. If you post up your location or where he often plays people will probably be able to point him in the right direction.

In terms of markers being more/less "powerful". Basically, all paintball markers should be set to fire under 300 feet per second. This is simpley down to adjusting the marker. Think of it like a speed limit on a car, all markers obey the speed limit, some are more fancy than others. In terms of rate of fire, an A5 will probably be able to fire more shots per second than a typical site marker, but each of those shots wont be faster/shoot further etc.

First of Ha ha ha....another man after my own heart. Have a few too many beers and buy random paintball stuff that you really shouldn't:D

In answer to a few of your questions, An A5 (or any paintball marker for that matter) will not be too powerfull for ANY site so long as it is set up correctly. It does not matter what make or model of paintball marker you use at a paintball site, usually they are only allowed to shoot at a rate of around 280 feet per second (FPS). Some sites will allow upto 300MAX. The 'power', or airflow is controlled and pre adjusted before gameplay by the user and then checked over a Chronograph (all sites have them) before games begin. You then have the opportunity to either turn up or down to reach the desired/safest power.
As for buying kit, i'm sure there will be a stack of posts on that following this one;)

Hope this has helped

Thanks Beaker, So you don't think he has just wasted nearly £300 then lol. I think it had something to do with the flatline barrel that gives you up to 100m sight. I may be wrong here so don't quote me on it. To be honest I am glad that I won't have to sit through Battlefield 2/2142 all day one Sunday a month, he will be out there getting shot for real lol. I know I need to get him some head gear and an air bottle as he has been lent one to try the marker out, (as my fence knows from being shot last night - it has got dents all over it) where is the best place to get these from?

Right here on the PGI classifieds section. Look for traders with good feedback and you will not go far wrong. You should be able to pick up a steel air tank in good nick for about £40 or a carbon fibre bottle (lighter) for around £65 onwards. In my own opinion the most important piece of kit you will need to buy is a quality mask and ideally you would be better off buying this brand new from a reputable website or pro shop.

Not wasted at all :)

With the other bits, the mask is most important bit of kit of anything. You get what you pay for, so the cheapest will be a lot more uncomfortable, prone to fogging and generally more hassle. So if you want to spend money on anything, do it on a good mask. That should mean he has more fun and is more likely to vacate the house for that precious Sunday :)

well first you need to determine if he's playing in the woods or if hes playing tournament style paintball (which has large inflatable bunkers on an open field). In terms of the A5 stealth, theres no reason why he wouldnt be able to use that at a paintball site providing it gets setup and run over a chronograph to make sure he isnt firing over 280FPS (feet per second). In terms of a kit always spend good money on a really good set of goggles, thats the first thing anyone told me to buy and it paid off big time, have a look at product from JT, DYE and Empire as they seem to be the most popular around here, see if you can take him to a store an try on different masks to see which fits him well and which ones he likes the looks of. A good pack (kinda like a small rucksack which holds 'pods' filled with paint) you might want to look at the NXE ones, i use those and their really really good (personally), a 4 pod pack shud do fine, unless he's playing tournament stuff you'll want to look at a 4+3 pod pack.

thats all i can think of at the moment, someone else will surely offer up advice as well so i hoped it helped a bit at least
