Maybe you shouldn't look at it as how it's unfair to you, the unknowing hittee.

How about this: you shoot someone in the pack/hopper/whatever; that player doesn't know he's been hit and continues to play as if nothing happened. Do you think it's fair that you legitimately eliminated a player but he continued to stay in the game for a while until a ref noticed the hit, or should something be done to balance the situation?

Or are you OK with players you shoot not leaving the field when they get hit?

Really. It isn't about punishing a player, it is about making a more fair game. You shoot someone, they are out! If they don't leave play, redress that injustice without consideration for intent.

The incentives should reward fair playing and discourage cheating and acting innocent.
