To get back to Jeff...

Yeah, you may need 5 or 10 matches to win...

But nobody who is winning is paying for their paint. On the off chance you survive the 3rd match (which by your analogy is just a wee bit more paint that a regular 10-man prelim) you'll have someone willing to get you the rest of the way if you're in the winners bracket, and certainly cut your costs if you're in the losers.

...

Just for comparison and perspective here...

Paintballchannel.com's team (which included me!) used 8 cases of Chronic for the entire 5 man event, and we placed 25th...I've GOT to teach those guys about the concept of suppressive fire....

I prefer the concept of "Put enough paint in the air and maybe your opponents will walk into it." ;)

Chris,

I suspect that there is less sponsorship out there than most people realize. Sure the top however-many teams in each division have it, but I'd wager dimes to dollars that more teams pay for their paint than otherwise. And paint costs'll add up mighty fast. Just those first three matches, in your scenario above, you'd've spent over $1500.

I am not positive, just guessing. I happen to have a well sponsored team (and since we beat our paint record at the Cup, its a darn good thing, too).

I agree Jeff...

Most teams pay for their paint, even if it's at $30 case or less. BUT, so long as you pick a sponsor and arrange something in advance (usually through the sales guy for your home field) you can get a reasonable paint price + "Free paint if you make Round X".

So, with a little foresight, nobody should be paying for paint for the later rounds of competition.
