Here's a question for my European friends.

I've heard a lot of criticism that the US is the wealthiest nation in the world, but our taxes are too low and we don't take good enough care of the poor in our own country let alone the rest of the planet.

Then, I see every other order (at least) that comes through from Europe, with the request to "please mark this as a gift" or at the bare minimum asking to reduce the stated sales price with the obvious intent to defraud customs and avoid paying the sizely VAT tax, which pays for all those lovely social programs you have.

So...it would seem the prevailing attituted is, "take care of the poor, but not with my money! use somebody else's hard earned cash!" Should you guys be happy everytime you place an order for that new shiny gun and get charged 25% (or more, I've got no idea) in taxes?

Just want a direct opinion from the people involved of how you guys feel about taking a financial hit for the unemployed dude down the street...

my own personal opinion is that taxes are way too high in this country...and i'm gonna be mega pissed off when i start paying them!!!

i take the extremely selfish view that if they're nothing to do with our country, they can **** off...so tht means any foreign aid...if people think foreign add needs to be given, then do it throu charities!!! not throu our taxes!!! so that those of us who would rather save some money, can do...

helping the homeless in our own country is more benificial...getting more people in homes, and employment is good the the UK economy, and therefore we will all benefit...

VAT is 17.5% and just goes to pay the wages of civil servents (not nurses  ) and fund government in general. National insurence pays for the NHS, benefits and a like. So VAT doesnt benefit anyone who really needs it except Tony Blair and his croneies.

If we didn't have to subsidise the rest of Europe, and accept every Tom, Dick & Osama who claims asylum we might not have to kiss your yank ass so often. Why don't you go back to packing your boxes and be thankful we're buying it in the first place.
Do it like the yanks, fire first, find out who you f##ked up afterwards.

Quite insightful...I never thought about it like that.

If you put it up on PBN -the politics bit, you'd get more debate.

If you don't take offence to his 'carte blanche' attitude of what he's suggesting and choice of words then thats your perogative. I have my opinion and happy to stick by it.

This country is just too damb expensive to run.

I blame it on the upper-middle class housewives, with nothing better to do than champion useless and pointless causes.

FFS, if a country has a problem, or a country has a famine, or a drought.............sort it out yourself, stop sponging off us.

Don't get me wrong, i'm as welsh as anyone, but the welsh language.........wtf........  .............who cares, it sounds like crap and does what, preserves our heritage.......bo**ocks.

And why the **** do we have four nations in one country, we can't win **** all at sports, because we're segregated within the confines of ridiculous borders.

Put the great back into britain.

United kingdom my arse.

is it just me or can i see this thread going downhill very quickly?? poltics for you

the problem is not so much the taxes we have to pay - i for one don't mind paying them as long as it goes towards useful things - more nurses, less managers for the NHS and not Prescott's fuel bill.

Completely agree with you Mr. Allen - the great disappeared a long time ago.

And Von Wehr - you were unnecessarily harsh but i agree with you on the subsidising of everyone but our own - our farmers for one and NHS for another - British is best.

And the initial comment by Dissent about "look after the poor just not with my money" - yea it seems to be that way. England is the one of the few nations that provides free health care for our citizens (and spongers). I would hate to whisked off in an ambulance, have life saving emergency and the be presented with a bill that would finish me off. i am very thankful of the NHS. So i can see Dissents point - but could it not be an British view rather than generalising to the whole of europe?

But the one mistake made globally to do with taxes is that they all tax the wrong people. Too much tax on us little people but hardly any on those who make more money than what they deserve. In laymans terms we tax the poor, give the freebies to the rich. Robin Hood had the right idea (take from the rich and give to the poor).

And before someone says anything i am not a Racist/Xenophobe(sp?). I am just a fed up, Englishman who believes in the royal family. I can say this because the flaming doesn't exist much here - unlike PBnation

Just my little view and input - if anybody was/is offended by my post is apologize in advance because no offence is meant in any way, shape, form or size.

I pretty much have to aggree with the above posts, I wouldn't mind paying taxes if the money went to the right places, but unfortunatly it doesn't.

I work for a relatively small local government and get to see how much of our (by our I mean the branch where I work) taxes are wasted on work shy spongers benefits, now I know not all benefit claimees are spongers but it annoys the hell out of me when I see people I know claim benefits who can't work through various health reasons but play football, golf etc while I work to fund their life styles.

So yep, I'll avoid as many taxes as I can.
