Baca, were you at LA watching the girls play?

Granted they get a lot of sponsorship but much of that is because many of them are connected to the industry and or work the events also. They don't 'just' get sponsorship because they are girls. They get sponsorship like all players in paintball because they are good for their sponsors... (whether it's skills on the field, owning related stores, or getting people into the booths to buy stuff).

But that given, and the fact that some of the girls need to work on their 'skills' they do actually have some decent players.

Watching Josie do run throughs and blowing guys up was actually pretty impressive. Especially for Division 3 X-ball where most of the 'all guys' teams were just sitting and playing it like 5-man. She did some of the best run throughs of the event barring X-ball, taking a lot of players with her to the deadbox and certainly not being scared of getting a welt or twenty. Shame not 'all' of the team has the same skills but they are working on it.

Also Clare and Ali and Sarah (the girl in the picture posted) have skills, if they can keep finding girls of similar ilk and train the others then I don't think they will be such a pushover in the future.

Flash, they are actually trying to put together a team that can play. Many of these girls are very serious ballers way before anything else.

TJ, No chicks in NXL deliberately? Which chicks could even cut it in NXL? I don't know of any.

Think that would bother Dick Clarke if he decieded co-ed ball was a ratings winner?

C'mon - every company in pball has decided that Hot Chick+Gun=Improved Sales - why should TV disagree?

PS You ust be mad pissed at what they did to you in What Paintball Gear - thass some ugly photoshop work.:p

Wouldn't bother me either. I'd like to see paintball get bigger in many ways. If we can have it as a sport all the better. If we have to have it as 'reality shows' then I can accept that also. Heck if we have to have 'emulsifiers' and WWW type format, I might puke each time I see it but I can still accept it. The bigger and more options we have the better the future looks and we will end up getting all formats.

:D Don't care... that much anyway ;) . I haven't seen it yet. Where's my copy? I'll see it at HB anyway. Will you be there?

I know what the conventional wisdom is but is it correct? Seems from replies so far that while most guys are happy for any excuse to watch women there is little real respect for a situation wherein a class of players is rewarded for one thing only.
So if the purpose of big industry support is to promote pball among those who already play I would suggest is a waste of time. Guys aren't buying Keely's calendar cus she can play ball.
And if the idea is to promote pball to the outside then who is the target audience? Is it other girls? You wouldn't think so from the sort of ads we see routinely used?
So does it strike anyone else as rather condescending? It does to me.

Let me add more power to the girls involved. I wish them the best of luck and--Clare, I apologise for picking on Empress specifically as I probably could have made the same point with any of the high profile girl teams.

And yes, Simon, I was there and saw them play.
And I am specifically questioning their presumed value to their sponsors.

And Meastro--there are chicks in the NXL. I make specific reference to them in my article about PSP LA Open. How's that for a tease?;)

How do you define their value to their sponsors?

Let's pick on another team for a moment... I dunno... how about the Evil Sharks?

A hugely sponsored team no doubt about it. Where's the value to their sponsors? Do they win that much? Do they always present themselves in the top 3 or the finals at each event they enter?

So tell me where you see the value in that team that represents the sponsorship dollars they get?

Do you think they would have the same sponsorship if the players weren't connected to the industry? If they didn't have a lot of players that worked for related media companies and could publicise their products? That weren't friends with everyone? That if they weren't a fun bunch of genuinely good people (apart from Piper) out playing paintball?

Hmm same reasons Empress get a lot of their sponsorship. You just seem to be picking on them because they are girls maybe?

If you have issues about their sponsorship values why not a lot of other all male teams? I see many all male teams not worth their sponsorhips at first glance, but they get them because of their relationships and things they do in the industry.

Let's pick on me, if you look at my balling skills alone there is no way in hell I am worth the sponsorship I get. But I get it because of other things I do and other areas I work in, which does make it worth it (hopefully ;) ) to my sponsors/friends/employers etc. to help me out in my everlasting quest to find bunkers big enough to hide behind :D ;) .

Oh and as for being worth the sponsorship... do you think Detroit's strange's performance at PSP LA justifies the rumoured costs of getting them into the NXL. Discuss. ;)

Love to all. Not intending to pick on anyone, just pointing out sponsorship comes in many forms for many reasons. Doesn't mean any reasons are less valid than others.

1--the crux of the matter. I would suggest even the sponsors themselves have little idea what works and how much benefit is derived. I would also suggest this state of affairs is changing as companies get bigger and more professional and--shameless plug--one of these days Ant will get around to using a 'VIEW' written awhile ago now about the future of sponsorship as we know it today.
2--asked and answered in your own remarks. Doesn't however answer how effective it might be though, does it?
3--not the same reasons at all.
4--issues? No. Try reading what I posted without the knee-jerk, gee, that means me too reaction. But sure, there's lot of sponsorships floating around that appear to be marginal at best as a matter of value. However, as noted, Empress is in the news today but if you want to expand the discussion it applies across the spectrum.
5--okay, glad we agree. So is it money well spent?
6--which costs would those be? The costs Crosman incurs anyway by virtue of owning an NXL franchise or the costs of rectifying a mistake they made last year in not signing Strange when they could have?
7--by valid I presume you mean pointlessly pissing away money? I'm forming a team of German Shepherds to play X-ball called 'Doggie Style'. They respond to whistles like clockwork. I'm expecting your support.

Absolutely if you buy my stuff for them to use. :D

And why is it pissing money away?

Heck even if gets someone to start threads on a board discussing them and the products they are using it's all helping in publicity right? It's just real tough to measure the value of that.

Just wondering, since LA PSP, who's got more coverage on the boards and in the press. Detroit Strange or Empress?

Who's had more pictures posted of them since that event?

Who's done more for their sponsors?

At least Empress helped take down the trailer... ;) :p

I'm curious as to what reasons are different?

Or is it just perceived that they don't have the same links and it must be they are getting sponsorship because they are girls?

If you look and know who the members of the team are, you would see a lot of links to the industry besides the fact they are girls that get them part of their sponsorship.

Are we as 'macho' paintballers never going to take a girls team seriously just because they are girls?

Are we always going to think that's the only reason they get sponsorship and only see value if they have pretty faces?

If so I think maybe 'we' have issues to deal with.

Funniest quote of LA PSP was one of the guys complaining that Josie over shot him on a run through (that'll teach him to spin) and the ref said 'shut up or take up bowling'. :D

Anybody can play and be part of paintball. We shouldn't descriminate or write people off just because of one factor.

I know some big fat dudes that can ball. I know some pretty girls that can ball. I also know some big fat dudes that have no skills and I know some pretty girls that, well I wouldn't kick them out of... an event... (;) ) but I wouldn't ask them to play on the same field... well I would... but late after everyone else has left... and err. I'll move on now.
