It simply isnt true, Dye and Planet both have fantastic customer service levels.
Ive shot both, I prefer the PM5. Its a matter of opinion. The idea that you have to upgrade the PM5 to equal a stock ego is rubbish tho

A stock Ego comes with ramping out of the box, comes with a clamping feedneck out of the box and comes with a purging on/off out of the box, that's 3 upgrades for a start!!! And the stock Proto trigger is rubbish, it wobbles about the place!
I'm not knocking PM5s, they are good, but to get the to the level of a STOCK Ego you've gotta spend some cash... end of.
I never had to call or e-mail Dye for support, but my opinion was based on the information available online. You go to Planet's website, there are manuals, tips, everything you need. Dye's has nothing, you ave to go to a forum to get any info. I'm sure Dye's after sales support is good, but a little investment in knowledge sharing goes a long way.

seen a pm5 going for £200 recently so unless you wanna lose some serious cash id stick with the EGO
shot/used both and im sticking with my Metal Grey Machine!!.. few have how crap it is because you cant get any upps for the Ego(s) and the reason because IT DOESNT NEED ANY... ok maybe an aftermarket barrel (not nesscesary as the stock is bloody brilliant) comes with everything to make playing easy ....no upgrading boards as the stock board in 05/06 Egos boath have like 3 types of ramping 2 types of semi .... ok yeah sure up the board if you fancy a change and would like to house unecessary modes but everything you need is on the damn gat as soon as it comes out of the box (and it is in a nice box mind , unlike the PM5/6 there in tiny little boxes and dont include a nice big metal sleeve as does the 06 )
