In the news yesterday it was announced that the E.U may be fixing a tariff on certain U.S. goods, in response to a similar tariff on European steel.
What has that got to do with paintball??
Think about it............
A lot of Paintball gear is produced by U.S. companies, and has no set catagory in the E.U's product lists. This means that items like tops and other clothing comes in as "fashion clothing".
End result (if this goes ahead) will be a massive hike in paintball gear across Europe!
Not good news. :(

I know the EU is planning to aim the retaliatory tariffs mainly on products coming from States in the US that are Republican so as to fire a warning shot over the Administrations bow.

Anyhow hopefully Bush will see sense and drop the Steel Tariffs before things get nasty. The funny thing is according to this weeks Economist magazine the Tariffs have cost far more US jobs in manufacturing than have been saved in the Steel Industry

Didn't the same thing happen when the US put a tariff on Canadian lumber, cos they accused Canada of selling it cheaper at higher quality?

Surely taxing another country's ability to produce a better product at a lower cost isn't the solution? They should look at their own production techniques!

Ok guys you're missing an important point here, the US economy can live without buying european but the european economy, which is in pretty dire straits as it is anyway, will really suffer if the Yanks stop buying Mercs, Porsche, BMW, wine, fashion etc because of a petty trade war.
I don't know if it's gonna make much of a difference to low value kit like playing tops etc but you never know.
Anyway the dollar tends to weaken on such moves from the US so for us consumers it should all work out pretty much the same.

All suffer

Okay *standing on soap box*

The US put an Illegal tax on steel imports from outside of the US. I state this is Illegal as it has been proven by International law. This has cost jobs in the UK and if George 'War' Bush feels he can get away with it then he would put taxes on Wine (so that everyone drinks cali white), Cars (he would want everyone to drive buicks and dodges), Clothes (everyone can wear Levis) etc etc.

The US is acting like a Bully, they have launched wars against 2 countries, threatened another country and now imposed a tax to stop free trade. Next we will hear about Americans being the father race and the only pure nation.

If the US continues this maybe they will start crying when they cant have the superb E-blade, and I believe WDP are based in the UK (apologies if I am wrong) so possibly bye bye Angel 4's. I know this is the extreme end of the stick, but somebody said the US can live without europe but europe cant live without America this is total 'pish', all that would happen is people would source their equipment from a different area. Now consider that the vast majority of everything is manufactured in the far east then how does America fit in there.

okay I think I am finished now, thanks for listening.

Believe me if they impose it it will make a big difference on kit prices!
Think about it. The E.U. plan to add a rate of between 8%-30% on various goods.
So you will have the trade price + tariff (up to) 30% + import duty (approx) 15% + Vat 17.5%.
An item of £10.00 would normally cost £13.52 to import.
With the tariff that would go up to £17.56.
Now that is worst case scenario, but if you look at the price of markers and clothing the prices rocket!

Does that mean we should bow down and let the US walk all over us?

What happens if the US imposed a tax on something which your company exports to the US, and your company then decides they have to cut jobs.

In the end everyone suffers, the UN has declared that the US has acted Illegally. Now if this was Iraq, the US would be asking us to make a new mandate and invade them!

Hopefully George W Bush will see his folly and withdraw the tax. If not then I say make them pay for the Goods THEY want from us, and believe me they do want goods from the EU.

Personally I think the steel tariffs are a bad idea.

You make it sound like it's a bad thing or something. I surmise that the 4 wars launched by the countries you refer to didn't bother you in the least.

We're talking about steel tariffs, and now you gotta bring race into it? I'd hate to see what would happen if we discussed re-districting or other hot topics.

Errm I am not defending the countries involved, however have the US or the UK found any NBC weapons in IRAQ? Now I believe that the Human rights aspect of the (last) gulf war is correct. As for Afganistan, well they were harbouring someone who, all the UN believe commited September 11th. In the end though, the UK, US and some other countries invaded a country based on evidence which a Government expert (god rest his soul) considered suspect. The UN appointed arms inspector Hans Blix has even brought into question the validity of the reports the governments received. This has nothing to do with Steel taxes, just showing US aggression.

I am not bringing race into it I am only stating that other countries have been bullies, and then gone onto further more extreme measures.

hope this clarifies my reasoning, if not please post.
