Buddha I would normally agree with you, but I also know of quite a few prominent people who don't want to put there names to their views sometimes because some people want to take it up further and not in nice ways outside of the boards.

Not everyone has the ability to see things the same way and some take it on elsewhere and use it for further issues in the future which is not right.

Hypothetical question... purely hypothetical you understand...

so you think it's ok for people to be able to use physical threats or threats against their events and companies to scare others away from making their opinions known?

and you don't think it's ok for people to make their feelings known without being worried what will happen to them the next time they attend a tournament? or event? or what might happen against events they promote or companies they work for?

Those are some reasons for posting anonymously.

It may not be respectable (and I agree I think) but it can be understood sometimes.

Just wondering.

surely everyone has the right to anominity (spelling?)
If you wish to blow the whistle on something etc then you have the right to be not known as the one who done it ;)

Besides, way to difficult to trace every account etc.

Buddha3 - you are a big, strong tough guy but I am a comparatively weak & feeble woman. I have been verbally abused by people who felt that comments I'd made on the boards were directed at them, and I can tell you now that a bunch of big fellas leaning towards me all shouting is very, very intimidating indeed & rather scary.

Now I don't even hide behind a regular net name, as far as I know I'm the only regular UK tourney player named Liz (& certainly the only Chick with that name) & have no problems with being associated with what I post hence I log in under my real name. BUT - I can completely understand people who want a little anonymity sometimes.

Take the situation of a pro player who wants to put his/her views across, but they are in opposition to their team's sponsor's views. The player really wants to make a good point but if they do, either they are kicked off the team or the whole team may lose sponsorship. I'm sure there are other situations where anonymity would be wanted for valid reasons.

Equally, I completely agree that we need to do something about people who create new identities just so they can insult someone else safely, or cause controversy for the sake of it. So I think the mods would have to take every situation on it's own merits, and also remember that sometimes people really, honestly do register as members specifically because they want to join in on a particularly "interesting" discussion.

BTW - anyone know how to get rid of a second identity here? I have another ID that wouldn't work so I re-registered myself as a new member, but can't get rid of the old one!

For once Famine, I am in agreement with you, an event as rare as rocking horse **** I know but nevertheless true.
There are times when people 'know' certain things and will 'out' them on this site but they are unable to reveal their true identity for sometimes obvious and sometimes not so obvious reasons.

The reasons for anonymity generally fall into two categories, the benign and the cowardly.
The former being a device to allow certain information to come out and for that person not to attract the consequent political implications were he to have posted under his real identity.
Also within this genre, we have people who will post merely opinions that once again would attract political consequences were they to be outed.
The latter case of assumed anonymity, and this is the more obnoxious type posting, is where we get some chicken ****, who posts crap about somebody or talks absolute **** / lies whatever and knows he/ she will cannot be held responsible.

I don't think we can ever eradicate the anonymous post nor do I think we should cuz after all, it does spice things up sometimes doesn't it ?
