yeah the only diffrence is the way they are tested, its very silly laws that prevent them being used in other countires, if any of you US people see a cheap HSE tank msg me ok? ;)

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Department of Trade (DOT) Each country has it's own set of safety rules and it's own way of testing. Just think alcohol.........a 70% proof vodka in the US is just a 35%ABV in the UK...... we use the metric percentage (alcohol by volume) whereas the US still use the traditional flaming charcoal standard.
It's also why a fair few American tourists come a cropper.... thinking UK drinks are half the strength they really are.
Same with the bottles, HSE and DOT bottles are both safe to fill, they just aren't recognised in the other country. (also one of the tests is far harsher........the US I believe).

i thought HSE was the harsher, but i wont fight about it :p seems to be so much grey area about filling and using HSE and DOT its silly, rules should become internatnal... but there are hundres of threads already discussing this so i wont start another. :)

Think HSE asks for the lowest 10% of test results on bottles to be tested have to be scrapped. When DOT bottles is the lowest 5% of bottles have to be scrapped or something like that. So I do believe that HSE testing is more stringent than DOT bottles :)

DOT = Department of Transportation, there's no such thing as the "Department of Trade" stateside. That's the Department of Commerce.

It is mis-information like this thats gets people all confused. You can use an HSE tank with no problems in the US, I have been doing so for the last few years....the other way around IE a DOT tank getting used here is the no no. Blame our rules for not allowing it both ways, for a change the american system appears to be the enlightened one, plus I do mean as a visiting national using a tank certificated for use in that persons own country. It's going to be interesting come Campaign time as H-Pac seem to be doing the fills and as they have made a very strong stand against the filling of DOT tanks under any circumstances....

Well in theory whoever supplies the air at any event in the UK should not fill DOT bottles. H-Pac are just following the law by not filling them, and they are the ones who could be put out of business if they are caught doing it.

And I'm not entirely sure that HSE bottles are legal in the US, even if they do get filled at US events. Best test is probably to take them to a dive shop, as they're more familiar with that sort of thing.

I'm still trying to find a nice sheet of paper that lets me take my tank on the plane without trouble.
