Custom charges when importing from America?

I'm sure there is a way to avoid the tax, i bought some stuff of ebay.com and an american site about 7months ago, both items arrived and i never had to pay any tax.

That was just "Luck"!

They don't have the manpower to process every parcel coming into the country, so some "like yours" get missed.

Just on a related side note.

"Is there any way to pre-pay your tax"?

I imported some CCM stuff recently and got caught on the tax which is fair enough and i don't mind paying, but what i did object to, was paying an £8 fictitious handling fee to Royal Mail.
