Download MS Defender Beta 2
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/default.mspx

Make sure you have the latest definitions for your AV Client and the above Antispyware package and the do a full sweep.

After the above Download and run Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsa2/default.mspx

If you are worried about future problems and don't mind spending a little time you could build yourself a Linux based firewall like IPCop or M0n0wall and setup a small double NAT'd network. These will run on old equipment like 486's and early Pentium's etc without any problem. Alternatively if you are willing to spend a little money you could get one prebuilt solution from someone like LinITX (http://linitx.com/index.php?cPath=4)
A very good little add-on to IPCop if CopFilter which contains a AVClient, AntiSpam client etc.

right appreciate the help guys. Cheers for that.

So, im up to date on all software (windows, spyware, AVG etc) scanned with spyware, AVG and panda. Panda has found some spyware but funnily enough would like me to buy some software. Now there's a surprise :)

Looks like im going to have to wait for pay day and go and buy McAfee.

Stinger is still running but nothing yet. Perhaps im being uber paranoid.

I wouldn't touch CacAfee for all the Tea in China. They don't test their DAT's before release. One of the guys updated the DAT's thursday last week and it deleted 1.2million files.

One of the best Free AV clients is Avast AV but the best Desktop AV client I have ever come across is Kaspersky.

The money's on F-Secure at the moment, these guys are finding the viruses before the big boys and are providing the most patches first.

AV is personal choice, most of them get there in the end. Just be careful what you look at, p0rn and hacking generally have high risks when it comes to spyware etc. don't download attachments blah blah.... we know it all already!

For the most comprehensive check use hijackthis, this will tell you everything that runs on your system at startup and allow you to remove it. Just make sure you google every suspect entry first ;)

an easier way to do that is just go: start, run, then type in msconfig, a box will come up click on the startup tab and see whats going on when you start up. if you have never done this befor you may want to stop a few things if you dont regually use them, eg. steam (gaming), msn, quicktime, nero, java, and more. if you dont know what the program is thats is starting up then you may want to check its location eg. qttask, i dont no what thats means but if you look at its location i no its in the quicktime folder.

Also about McAffe, i have used this for the last year (ran out, only lasts one year) and i must say i dont personally like it, it seems to slow my computer down quite alot, but i must admit it is good to have the on guard virus protection. Also i have used computers with Norton and i must say McAffe is loads better than norton but i odnt personally like either.

Mate, are you up to date on Windows Updates?

Also a good one is to boot into safe mode (press F8 before the XP loading screen comes up). This will stop windows from loading anything at startup excet the windows system stuff. Then run your adaware/AVG stuff.

May sound strange but have you purchased any Sony label CD's and played them in your puter recently? Some of the new Sony stuff uses DRM (Digital Rights Management) that also installs something called a rootkit. The directory it installs to becomes "masked" from 99.9% of all applications including most anti-virus scanners. Download the Rootkit Revealer and run that too.

As crumpler said you can check whats opening up when you start windows but honestly i would mess around with that unless you know what you are doing.

My suggestion is to firstly check windows updates, make sure you up to date.

2. Download Ad-Aware SE Personal, get rid of all the stuff that should be there

3. Download Firefox internet browser, alot better then IE5/6 , will stop most viruses and pop-ups.

4. Use an online scanner to check your computer for viruses, a good one is

Panda Antivirus

Hope it works.
