well, bit of a strange one this. Im worried someone might be 'in' my computer.

Reasons for this:

1) i dont have any automatic sign in's anymore. have to manually type in. Admittedly i did change some settings but i did change them back as i didn't like it but it doesn't seem to have had any effect.

2) i saw a strange symbol upon start up a while back and haven't seen it since.

3) my computer seems to be gaining memory as if stuff is being deleted (i haven't deleted anything recently) and im losing a fair amount like. A good gig or so over the past week.

I run AVG and spybot and they are both up to date. I haven't downloaded anything nefarious recently also. Am running them as we speak. I also run the windows security system along side, but im not sure how good that is....

any ideas? am i just being paranoid?

Once it has run it should give you a better idea if something's up.

If you want to make sure that you've not had any system files removed (a lot of files aren't used until you need them) run this:

sfc /runonce

reboot and your PC will scan your protected operating system files. You will need your windows CD to hand though!

Also, download AVG Anti-Virus. It's free and pretty good!

Any more problems you can PM or E-Mail me

a black vertical rectangle with two red circles in the system icon tray which dissappeared once everything had booted up.

edit: bazooka hasn't inspired much confidence seeing as it takes all of two seconds to scan my enitre computer....

edit2: after reading the FAQ it says itll only take one second. It still doesn't inspire much confidence that its actually doing anything worthwhile

Sounds worrying - Download "Stinger" from here http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Run this - if you have any trojans it will find em - We use this for our networks and usually does the trick.

AVG - even though this is free, it does have a habit of letting the odd virus past, and aint the best about and most viruses can circumnavigate its protection system (you can guess that cos its free!) - you really need to bum or buy a copy Mcafee or Nortons and keep it updated.

I would do the following Chris :)

1. Go to pandasoftware.com and run an online security check, this will check for spyware, dodgy cookies, viruses, and also remove anything on your machine (other than cookies).
2. Download and install Windows defender from www.microsoft.com/spyware
3. Make sure you have all the latest Windows updates on your machine.
