Just got broadband finally sorted at my house and was told the half and meg is the best i can get cos im on a long line was just wondering if there is anyway i can make sure that my connection does not deteriorate also main phone socket down stairs in the kitchen want it upstairs in the office ive just decorated would extending the line either by phone line extension or dsl cable extension deteriorate the connection if so would getting the main socket moved help . Using a cheapy adsl usb modem provided by my service provider would a router help with the connection process aswell.

WKD: i dont no much about your modem as such but yes having a big cable come from your kitcken to your office up stairs will slow it down abit, maybe quite alot, they say no more than 2 meters (i think) but im no technician at this. what you could do if find out about geting another main phone socket fited into your office, so it dont just branch of the other main one but it has its own main line from tele pole out side?

Dude...the thing has travelled like 6K...a couple of meters wont make much difference....However...you could be right on teh cusp of getting 1Meg.
If you get your socket moved, get it cabled from your existing main socket, to teh new location...they will fit an NTE5 (master socket removeable front plate)...then get them to wire your extension downstairs, off teh front plate....what BB doenst like, is lots of extension wiring, star wiring (two or more off another) etc....by having your main socket where you want your BB...you can get a special main line filter, which goes on teh front of teh socket and filters teh BB away from all of teh extensions...once you have done that...your service will be better...if in doubt...ask them to sen an Engineer out to check your conection...if teh engineer does any work, you will get billed for it...PM me for further details if you fancy having a go your self.
