From what I've read, the majority of isp's offer a 256 only up. Its interesting to follow peopels line of thought though when they think that this massive jump in 'speed' will decrease gaming pings, when in fact it doesn't really touch the upload, meaning only a small decrease in pings. :( Although, the higher speeds increase i guess its just a matter of time before hte upload goes with it. Well, we can but hope.

Crumps - the only real way to get a 'high' u/l speed is to get SDSL. But you would have to be very rich to afford that luxury at the moment.

SDSL gives you the same up as down (I've just had 2 2-megs installed at a customers offices).

Bulldog does increase the up speed (like you said) - but it's still not as nice as a 2-meg up and down :).

Look at any of the ISP's running "upto 8 MEG"...this is the ADSL Max Rate service...your line will be set up, to operate at its maximum reliable rate.
With the increase in Downstream, there is also an increase in Upstream..so..if you are close enough to get 8 MEg down, you will get around 800k Upstream.

Other than that, SDSL (Symetrical Digital Subscriber Line) rather than ADSL (Asymetrical Digital Subscriber Line)..is the only way to get very high upstream rates...but it's very expensive.

Take a look in your Routers Stats screen, look for the section that shows you up and downstream rates. Look for Downstream Attenuation or Line length...as an example 42dB's will give around 4.5M downstream.

I'm sure Nildram were offering it a couple of yeasrs ago, integrating 2 different adsl lines giving you thier combined up and down. I could be thinking of something else though, i haven't looked into it in ages - kind of behind the times with the market these days to be honest.

Guys,

I have just moved 3 miles outside Galway and the broadband here is w*ank or doesnt exist depending which part you live in. There are numerous providers here but only one can supply it to me currently with the max being, hold on, wait for it - 2MB download with 256K upload (sobbing by now)!!

The prices here are just so high compared to what I was getting back in Blighty.

Sniff sniff, wish I had my 10MB line again!!!

Bonded ADSL is basically load balancing 2 or more ADSL circuits. The idea was to give you more down and up by combining the circuits - but that is also an expensive option.

Just be patient - we will all have the banwidth we need in time. God, I remember when a 300/300 baud modem was the norm (and 1200/1200 was fast!).

You seen the prices in the States? There a 'towns' that have everybody linked together on cable. And they usually get it for free!!

The UK is so far behind the times when it comes to xDSL. It is probably to do with all the crap ex-USA cast offs we get when people like AT&T upgrade.
