This is beginning to sound like Jackass! And Jamie b, since you're location is London I doubt you witnessed that guy in Serries 2002 who shattered his knee in the woods. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I've never heard anyone in so much pain in all my life. So knee pads probably arn't such a bad idea after all. But do other, less essential pads reduce the chance of the paintballs breaking, and if so, isn't that in itself a bit dodgey?

Having seen, heard, and caused my fair share of broken knees and related body parts, I can pretty much tell you that very few knee pads are capable of preventing an injury like that. The force required to shatter bone will not be stopped by a few inches of padding. All padding does is stop things like chafing, scratching, and bruising. Pads capable of preventing breaks are so big and bulky, they are hardly fit for balling.

My old "Redz" pads stopped me from breaking a bone. Fell 15 feet onto my knee, and ddin't break the knee. Instead, the shock went to my spine locking L3 and L4.

ouch.

I don't know, I have bad joints, I like my padding. And I'll CONTINUE to like it until further notice. :)

just to add my worthless point......

.....so would i be refferred to as 'hard core'? i wear mits, thats it. my standard kit (mask, jersey, trousers, tanels) but no padding, this has proved costly before, i've ripped the skin off my knees soooo many times, and ive battered my elbows alot too, but i find padding restrictive and it increases chaffing (is that how you spell it?)

I don't wear knee/elbow pads but last year I lost my footing in a woodland tourney (running full pelt like a fool) and overbalanced, so rather than fall forward and land on my marker I did a front flip....... didn't see the tree stump and I landed across it. Shattered all four pots in my slam pack and left me completely jellyfished for about three hours...... I'm convinced that little bit of lumbar support on the slam pack saved my spine. A bit of padding goes a long way. We've got no way of knowing what the long term effects of the "knee slide" are on a player who uses it consistently..... the sport hasn't been around long enough yet, (no forty year olds who've played from sixteen and now have joint problems), it's just like the unknown consequences of repeated headshots or eating Ginsters Pasties every weekend (Microwave Burritos are the nearest US equivalent)....... our sport is new, we won't know what it's doing to us for a while yet.

I slide in on my knees a lot. Having the padding justs absorbs the shocks due to uneven grass, so I can shoot as I slide and be stable.:D

Seriously, I do slide a lot kneeling as well as Superman-style, so I feel better having pads on elbows and knees.

I wonder about the long term effect of all those welts will be. I had the assignment in one tournament to go get the flag on the break to insure a semis spot. I got it every time, but the center-50 was so small I would die immediately after. I got lit every game through the prelims! Then, I had to be a human flag pole. These teams were upset I had taken 25% of the points already, and they let me know it. Will I grow scales from all the extra love that day brought me? I have to think there is sub-dermal scar tissue all over my shoulders and back from that flag pole stint.

Yup, any repeated consistant injury can lead to problems..... wonder what it is doing? Every contusion you suffer runs slight risks........ times that by a few hundred. It's like sun burn, once isn't too dangerous, but do it regularly. But then again, think about boxing..... two blokes braining crap out of each other and no-one seems too worried about that.
