On a serious note. Why do brit and Euro refs have the reputation for being better judges than the US guys?

Is it because they have a more consistent approach due to the fact they don't know the majority of the teams and show no favoritism?
no favoritism?

Have you ever played against a french team, with french judges?

Sorry to generalise, but you know its true!

(please note I have nothing against french people, inspite of any armpit hair/ odour/ issues. and /or judging ability/ national pride/ absurd acusations of bias.)

And im sure there may ;) be a few exceptions

On the whole I don't see any big differences in the skills between euro and 'merican refs. You can hand-pick top examples from each country and have a great crew, or you can take whoever shows up and have a crap crew.

The big difference (to me) is the way the reffing is handled between the different series: NPPL - dedicated judges, PSP, Millenium - team judging. Dedicated judges don't necessarily gaurantee better judging, but it does eliminate favoritism and, in the long run, should provide more uniform judging.

As far as the stand up/lay down issue - good referees move around as they need to, with starting positions and coverage zones based on the field layout. Positioning (laying, standing, missionary) only takes you so far. If you're not willing to get in there and take the hits, you can't make the calls and you're a crap ref.

Don't get me started on the french...

PS - Scut, clean out your inbox. I tried to respond but your box is full.

Just my opinion

When I first went to Europe to play in 1996; I was truly amazed at the caliber of reffing at the Mayhem Masters. I played with the All Americans and we finished 2nd behind Nam Wrecking Crew. Marshals really took pride in what they did. I didn't feel like the promoter had hired a bunch of kids to fill in Reffing. The next trip that year was to Borudeux (so for the spelling), for the 7-man event. At that event there was all sorts of issues with players threating the Marshals and the refs just letting things go. We won the event but it was a crazy one.
A couple of years later and I head back to europe with Dynasty. Marshals were diving all over the place, running down players and busting players for cheating. I had never seen so many one for ones.
Until the NPPL split from PSP the reffing in the US was just plain crap. Teams would favor other teams knowing that they would expect favors in return. Teams would show up drunk to ref, or would be drinking on the field. I think that there are a handfull of really good refs that are unbiased and fully competent in the US. I think that as time goes on that the NPPL will develop more of these highly qualified Marshals because Chuck is deticated to seeing this happen.
